THE CANTERBURY EPISCOPAL SCHOOL
Youth & Government
By Willow H. 6th
On the first Saturday of Thanksgiving break, the Youth and Government team went to the District Conference. Of course, we were a tiny bit nervous, but also thrilled to see what fate awaited us. When we arrived, Jordan L. and myself started working on bill jackets, since we were going to be the chair and clerk for the 1
st half of the
committee meeting. Remi S. and Rance G. were going to be chair and clerk for the 2
nd half. After we finished, we had
an opening from Jonathan J., our state Lieutenant Governor, and a few others. Then we began! Chairing and Clerking is a big responsibility. The chair has to begin the session, end the session, move into the different types of periods, and keep the room in order. The clerk has to read out loud the Pro/Con slips, Amendment slips, count the votes, and use all of that to give the speaker their remaining time for closing summations. After the 1
st half, Jordan and I switched
with Remi and Rance; it was now our turn to debate. It is a little bit intimidating, at least for me, that somebody listening to you talk is either making up something to help the bill get passed, or making up something to get you eliminated. We are not sure if we made it to the state conference, but I think with the results we got, we might! Members of this year’s Youth and Government team are: Davis B., Adrianna B., Kourtney C., Daisha C., Alison G., Rance G., Willow H., Jonathan J., Jordan L., Alena P., Karlly S., and Remi S. Top 3 scoring delegates in our committee room: Jordan L., Remi S., and Willow H. Distinguished Delegates: Adrianna B., Alison G., Jordan L., Remi S., and Daisha C.

Fidel Castro, a Cuban leader, was
born in 1926 and recently passed
away. However, Fabian
Escalante, the former head
of the Intelligence
Directorate, had a very
difficult job; he was the
man in charge of
protecting Castro for many
of his 49 years as
president. Castro survived 638
assassination attempts. Fidel Castro
outlasted 10 U.S. presidents before
stepping down because of health issues.
He was a strong leader for Cuba and
loved by many. Fidel Castro died of
health issues mainly because he was a
smoker. He decided to quit, but it was
too late because he had smoked for so
long that the damage had already been
done.

Fidel Castro ruled over Cuba for 47 years. Fidel Castro was a dictator, which means that the people of Cuba had no say in their government officials. Whereas, we the people of America, do
have a say in the government. Fidel Castro was born on August 13
th,
1926, and died November 25th
, 2016. He was 90 years old when he passed away. Through his tenure as the ruler of Cuba, there were 10 sitting U.S. Presidents. Fidel was the 17
th
President of Cuba. Cuba is 60 miles from Florida’s coastline which makes it very close to the U.S. Border. Due to
the close proximity, during Castro’s time as president, there were parents that sent their children in rafts and families endured the trip and hoped for safety on the trip to the United States to flee Cuba. When Fidel Castro died of old age, there were mixed emotions of his death. Cubans in Florida are celebrating, in hope of seeing family again. Some people that live in Cuba are sad over his
death. During Castro’s presidency, America cut off all trade with Cuba and Americans were unable to travel into Cuba. Fidel Castro’s life, presidency, and his passing are world news events. Fidel Castro was known as a president, a dictator, a tyrant, a revolutionary, but mostly he was known as a controversial and divisive world figure.
Awesome Alison
By Anna S. 5th
I had the opportunity to
interview Alison G. in 6th
grade about some of her
favorite things. She said her
favorite color is blue
because it's on one of her
favorite logos. I asked
Alison what her favorite
class is. It was pretty hard to choose, but she
loves Language Arts because Mrs. Lage is
enthusiastic and funny and her writing
prompts are fun. Alison's favorite Bible verse
is the 23rd Psalm, "The Lord is my Shepherd.
I shall not want. He makes me lie down in
green pastures. He leads me besides still
waters. He restores my soul.” I asked her
about her dream college and she said,
"University of Connecticut a.k.a. UCONN.”
Her favorite holiday is Christmas, of course. I
asked Alison what her favorite quote is and
she gave a really good answer. She said,
"Worry is a waste of time. It doesn't change
anything. All it does is steal your joy and
keep you very busy." I asked Alison what her
favorite joke is and it was quite a funny one,
"Why are Italians so good at making coffee?
They really know how to ‘espresso’
themselves.”
Book Corner: Middle School the
Worst Years of My
Life
by James Patterson
By Tylon D. 6th
Rules Aren’t For Everyone. This is what Rafe Katchadorian says in the book, Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life. Have you ever heard the term, “Break every rule the book”? Well, this is literally what Rafe did. He has an imaginary friend named Leo the Silent. When going to H.V.M.S., Hills Village Middle School, for the first time, they open in an assembly for people that are running for student council. A lot of people gave their speech. Then all of a sudden, he hears this amazing voice and when he looks up he sees a beautiful girl. Her name is Jeanne Galletta. When he goes home, as usual, he sees his future dad laying on the couch with his dog by his side. His mom is usually not home. That is when he starts Operation R.A.F.E. He goes on until his mom finds out and he gets suspended, then expelled. Read this book today…to get the rest of the story!

For Thanksgiving Break, I went to the amazing city of Singapore! Singapore is one of the oldest city-states in the modern world. A city-state is a city that is an independent state. Singapore is part of the country of Malaysia (even though it has its
own flag). Singapore is in the southern part of Malaysia and has a tropical climate because it’s close to the equator. It also has a global financial center. Many Asians live in Singapore and speak Chinese, Japanese, Malay, and more. English is the official language although many places have Chinese subtitles such as the movie theater. Singapore doesn’t have as much Asian culture
as I expected to see because it has adopted many things from America. My family and I went to the most diverse restaurants we could find to have the Asian culture experience.
Pokemon: Sun & Moon
By Jordan L. 6th
It’s a classic. Almost everyone has either played the games, watched the movies or TV shows, traded cards, bought figurines, or all of the above. At the moment, the newest and most popular game in the Pokémon series is Pokémon: Sun and Moon. In 1996 in Japan, and in 1999 in the United States, Pokémon: Red and Green made its debut. 20 years later, the first installment of the seventh generation of Pokémon games has been released. In the past, Pokémon games followed the adventures of a young Pokémon trainer and their friends working to become the “very best, that no one ever was”. However in both the Sun and Moon games, the protagonist is a trainer in the Aloha region, (Which is based on the island, Hawaii) who attempts to thwart the evil plans of the villainous organization Team Skull. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. Pokémon: Sun and Moon is available to play on the Nintendo 3DS. So go become the hero and catch ‘em all!
Sensational Singapore
Dak, the Dallas Superstar!
by Courtney A. 6th
Rayne Dakota "Dak" Prescott was
born on July
29, 1993 in
Sulphur, LA.
Prescott
played for
the
Mississippi State Bulldogs, where
he was the starting quarterback
from 2013-2015. Prescott was
selected in the fourth round by
the Dallas Cowboys in the 2016
NFL Draft. Prescott's first time
starting in the NFC East game was
on Sept. 11, 2016 against the
New York Giants. Prescott
became the fourth rookie to open
a season as a starter in franchise
history, and the first rookie
quarterback for the Cowboys
since Quincy Carter in 2001.
Singapore is known for its shopping, food, and entertainment. They had better Chinese food than America did, so I pushed my parents to go to one more Chinese restaurant before we left. When I went to look around in the mall, there were many expensive antiques. I saw many tourists attractions such as the Merlion (a gigantic sculpture of a
lion), Art Science Museum (a famous museum), Marina Bay Sands (a famous mall), Singapore Flyer (the biggest ferris wheel in Singapore), and more. Singapore is the cleanest city I’ve ever experienced in my life! It’s illegal to chew bubble gum because people always litter the wrappers. I hope to walk the streets
of Singapore again soon.
My Amazing Aunt
By Sarah P. 6th
I recently
interviewed my
aunt, Priscilla
Ortiz, who is an
elementary
teacher. She is
married and has 2
children. My aunt
started college in 2010, and
graduated from The University of
Phoenix in 2014. She received her
bachelor’s in psychology. That same
year, my aunt became a
kindergarten teacher for DISD. My
aunt has been teaching for three
years now. I asked her why she
wanted to be a teacher. My aunt
said, “I wanted to start teaching
because I wanted to make a
difference in the lives of others, and I
had teachers leave their mark in my
heart, and that inspired me to do the
same.” I asked my aunt what made
her want to finish college? My aunt
said, “I wanted to be an influence
and role model to my kids and family,
and show them that you can do
anything you set your mind to, no
matter how old you are or what
situation you are in.” I asked my aunt
if she knew that she wanted to be a
teacher when she graduated from
high school. My aunt said, “I actually
wanted to be a nurse and went to
school to be a medical assistant. I
ended up changing my classes
because I realized that was not my
calling.” My Aunt plans to continue
her education, so that she can one
day become a school counselor. I
asked my aunt if she could change
her career would she choose
something different. Her response
was “No! I love what I do, and it
brings joy to my heart when I know
that I can make a difference in
someone’s life.”
Meet Mrs. McLain By Blake E. 5
th
For this edition of the
Cougar Chronicle, I had the
pleasure of interviewing my
Aunt, Shaiah McLain. She is
from Baltimore, Maryland.
Mrs. McLain has been a
teacher for 15 years. She
started teaching in 2002. Did
you know that her favorite
color is lavender? Well now
you do!!! She has taught
many grades. Mrs. McLain
has taught preK-5th
grade.
Currently, she teaches the
2nd
grade. I asked her, “What
is your favorite grade to
teach?” She said, “My favorite
grade to teach is the 2nd
grade.” There are 27 kids in
her class at this time. WOW!
Mrs. McLain’s favorite food is
crab cake? She became a
teacher to make a difference
in children’s lives. Her
favorite part of teaching is
when children get the
concept. Her favorite subject
is reading? My favorite
subject is writing, so that’s
why I wrote this. I can’t wait
for the next Chronicle.

Protests in America
By Remi S. 6th
As everyone should know,
Donald Trump has become
America’s President-elect.
This means that he will be
the President of the United
States of America starting in
January of 2017. Though
this news is inevitable,
many Americans are very
unhappy about this. This is
mainly because many
American people don’t feel
that Mr. Trump will
represent our country in the
best way possible or that he
will listen to their ideas for
the future. Even though it
is certain that he will be our
next president, thousands
of people have chosen to
show their disapproval in
the form of public protests.
In Oakland, officers had to
be called in to handle this
situation. Small fires in the
streets were started during
the protest. Protests even
happened in New York City
outside of Trump Tower.
These caused streets to be
shut down, traffic jams, and
police involvement. I feel
that Americans should put
aside their differences and
give Donald Trump a
chance to represent us
before they start judging
him. Though this is a scary
time for America, the
people must trust that the
future will be brighter than
today.
Trolls
by Elijah S. 5th
The trolls are little
creatures who are
happy all the time.
They’re so happy
they have their
own “hug time!” They are led by King
Peppy and his daughter, Princess
Poppy. But one day, they are captured
by the Bergens, tall creatures who think
they will never be happy until they eat a
troll. It is a special day for the Bergens
because they are celebrating Trollstice,
the day when they will all eat a troll.
On this particular day, King Gristle
Sr.’s son, Prince Gristle Jr., would eat
his first troll. Fortunately, King Peppy
and the trolls escape using the
underground tunnel. Furious, King
Gristle Sr. turns his rage on Chef, who
planned Trollstice, banishing her. 20
years later, Princess Poppy throws a
huge celebration to celebrate the trolls
escape, despite Branch’s warnings.
Branch is a paranoid troll who was
turned grey because of his Grandma’s
death. Sure enough, Branch was right.
The loud party attracted Chef. She
captured most of the trolls. The trolls
she captured were Guy Diamond, who
speaks in an auto-tuned voice, Cooper,
a giraffe like creature with a permanent
grin, Biggie and his pet worm, Mr.
Dinkles, Satin and Chenille, who have
conjoined hair, and Creek, Poppy’s
crush. Reluctantly, Branch goes with
Poppy to Bergen Town, but only if she
stops “scrapbooking”. On their way
there, they meet Cloud Guy, a pretty
laidback dude who wears socks without
shoes. [He describes me] Meanwhile,
Chef returns, persuading Prince Gristle
Jr. to let her be in charge of Trollstice.
Branch and Poppy free the trolls. Then
Branch and Poppy meet Bridget, the
scullery maid. They get her a date with
the Prince, Creek betrays the trolls, and
the trolls get captured and turn grey.
But then Branch sings and the trolls
turn back to their normal color and
Branch turns blue! The trolls then
convince the Bergens they can be
happy and that all they need to do is
find their happy place. Chef and Creek
are then pushed into a cart that was on
fire and are eaten by a monster. Now
the trolls and Bergens live in peace!
Madden 17 Madness
By Jacob M. 5th
Madden lovers,
if you liked the
previous
Madden games,
then you’ll love
Madden 17.
Madden 17 has added a lot of new things like
the ticker at the bottom of your screen, which
shows you updates and analysis from around
the league. I read reviews and Brian Mazique
didn’t like the halftime show. I agreed with
him. I think it should be like the halftime show
in the NFL because it brings more excitement
to the game. I dislike the “injured reserved”
button because it ends your player season. I
also dislike the injuries to the quarterback
because in reality the quarterback only gets
injured 30% of the time. There is a lot to love
about Madden 17! It’s hard to slug a long
bomb down the field (Long bomb means long
pass) and it makes your experience with
Madden even better. I don’t like that you can’t
make your own stadium, logos, and uniforms,
but the good thing about Madden now is you
can make your own players. In another great
video game, 2k, you make your own uniform,
stadiums, and logos. One thing that is new and
fresh is that you can block kicks and punts.
The best thing about Madden is the great
graphics. The players look like the NFL
players and they have new color rush
uniforms. The new running mechanics show
you different ways to juke, hurdle, and spin
which is one of the many great things about it.
The best of Madden are the dances when you
get into the end zone because you can do the
salsa dance and the dab. According to Forbes,
Madden 17 has received a 7.75 out of 10. I’d
rate Madden a 9.80. The game is amazing!

What kind of room has no doors or windows? What gets broken without being held? What kind of tree can you carry in your hand? Which word in the dictionary is
spelled incorrectly? Take off my skin-I won’t cry, but you will. Who Am I? What can you catch but not throw? What is always coming but never arrives? What invention lets you look right through a wall? If you have me, you want to share me. If you share me, you haven’t got me.
Who Am I? What’s at the end of a rainbow?
