The Big Switch: turning London’s buses and taxis electric

The Big Switch

London’s buses, taxis and vans still mostly run ondiesel. They shouldn’t. Air pollution from trafficcauses huge health problems, and makes Londona dirty, noisy city. That needs to change.

Our plan shows how all of London’s busesand taxis, and most commercial vans, could

run on electricity by 2020. It’s possible.

- 700,000 asthma sufferers in London

- Economic cost of the health impacts of poor air quality in London as high as £2 billion

The recharging network

• Our plan: installation of 500 standard and 500 high capacity chargers per year from 2012 until 2016

• Annual cost of £11m, and a total final

cost of £55m

• Paid for by savings in bus fuel costs

Benefits – saving lives

Reductions in air pollution:

• Oxford Street: 65% reduction of NO2 27% reduction local PM10

• Across London: 34% reduction of NO2 25% reduction local PM10

Benefits – saving lives

Reductions in air pollution improve health.

Making The Big Switch could save 600-1000 lives

each year
