Perspective Drawing

Art 1 Interior Spaces Project

The Beginnings of Perspective! The invention of

linear perspective dates back to the early 15th century, and is generally attributed to the Florentine architect Brunelleschi; however, many of his ideas continued to be developed and used by many Renaissance artists

Brunelleschi, Drawing of the centre nave in St. Lorenzo, Early 15th century

Da Vinci, Study of the Adoration of the Magi

In one point perspective, objects must be placed so that the front sides are parallel to the picture plane, and the side edges of the object recede to a single point

In one point perspective, objects must be placed so that the front sides are parallel to the picture plane, and the side edges of the object recede to a single point

! This point, or dot, is called the “Vanishing Point” and rests on the “Horizon Line”.

! Objects above the horizon line appear above the viewer’s point of view. Objects below the horizon line appear below the viewer’s point of view.

! Parallel lines are two or more lines that never touch. There are two sets of parallel lines in this picture: Vertical lines and Horizontal Lines Can you find the parallel lines in this picture?

! Converging lines are two or more lines that emerge from the vanishing point. Can you find the converging lines in this picture?

Artist Albrect Durer used perspective in his engraving St. Jerome dans sa Cellue. Can you determine where the vanishing point is?
