Who is Chinua Achebe?

Chinua Achebe is a Nigerian born novelist, poet, professor & critic.

He was born on November 16th, 1930 and died on 21st March, 2013.

He died at the age of 82.

He wrote 5 novels, his first being Things Fall Apart which was written in 1958.

Who is Chinua Achebe?

Where is the novel set?

The novel, Things Fall Apart, is set in the Nigerian villages of Umofia and Mbanta of the Igbo Tribe.

The year of the setting in the novel was around the 1900s which allows Okonkwo’s life to straddle within the pre and post European imperial era.

Nigeria’s Colonial History

Nigeria’s colonialism time period was in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The British began its influence in Nigeria with the prohibition of the slave Trade to British subjects in 1807.

The prohibition lead to the collapse of the African Slave Trade and the collapse the Edo Empire.

Edo Empire – Great African tribe in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Language

There 520 language spoken in Nigeria.

The official language of Nigeria is English.

The other major languages are: Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Ibibio, Edo, Fulfulde and Kanuri.

Nigerian Cuisine

Most of Nigeria’s food is yam-based, rice-based or bean-based.

Nigeria’s dishes uses many spices and herbs along with palm oil or very hot chili peppers.
