MAIN VERB

 USE

o  Actions that started in the past and continuing up to the present (live,

feel work present perf simple & cont without difference in meaning). 

He has been writing a letter for two hours. (He’s still writing it) 

He’s been doing the project for a month.

She’ s been sleeping for ten hours.

o  Past actions of certain duration having visible results or effects in the

present.

He’ s been crying. His eyes are red.

My hands are dirty because I’ ve been writing with chalk.

She’s very tired. She’ s been training hard.

o  Actions expressing anger, irritation, annoyance, explanation or

criticism.

 STATIVE VERBS: no continuous form.

They’ve known him since he was a baby. (‘ ve been knowing)

I’ve been a teacher since 1990 . (‘ ve been being)

She hasn’t liked fish since she was in China. (hasn’t been liking  )
