Televangelism and It’s Effects on the Traditional Church

Defining Topics

• Televangelism

–Means of spreading the Gospel involving the use of television

• New Testament Church

– Apostolic precedent for the Christian Church, set in the first century by the apostles of Jesus Christ.

The Old Covenant

• Set when God promised to make Abrahams descendants more numerous than the stars in the sky or the sand on the shore.

The Old Covenant

• To enter Heaven, the Israelites had to obey the laws God gave to Moses in the Ten Commandments

Transition Between Covenants

• When Jesus came to Earth, he took the place of animal sacrifices.

• He once and for all atoned for the sins of man.

Stipulations of the New Covenant

• Two stipulations–Make disciples– Live like Christ

Following the New Covenant

• The stipulations of the New Covenant can be fulfilled by only watching a televangelist

• Following the traditions of the apostles becomes difficult without going to a physical church building

The New Testament

• Broken down into two main sections– Church History• (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts)

– Epistles• Letters of Paul

– (Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews)

Communion

• Before Jesus was taken, He ate with the apostles and asked them to partake of the bread and wine in remembrance of what He was about to do for them.

Fellowship

• By Fellowshipping with other believers, one can be held accountable to one’s faith.

• Acts 2:42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

Billy Graham

• One of the most influential televangelists

• Rose to prominence in 1949

• Pastor to twelve U.S. Presidents

• Was on the cover of TIME in 1954

Oral Roberts

• Full of controversy• Began Radio broadcast

in 1947; Television in 1954

• Faith Healing• Unorthodox fund-raising

techniques

Joel Osteen

• Pastor at Lakewood Church

• “Inherited” Lakewood Church

• Doesn’t talk about God in his sermons

• Criticized for his “Christianity-lite” approach

Conclusion

• A Christian can follow the teachings of Jesus by not attending a physical church

• Televangelist must preach cautiously or risk losing funding, and are thus held by their donators.

• One must be careful, and check a televangelists teaching against the Bible.
