Team Building Sydney: How to Assemble the A
Team
What does it take to build a team that will take your company or
organisation to new heights? Robin Sharma, No 1 best-selling author of The Leader Who Had No Title and
founder of The Titan Academy,
shared some insights on how to build a team of great performers that can help your business thrive and grow.If you’re
wondering how you can succeed at team building in Sydney, here are some excerpts from Sharma’s How to
Build a Team of Picassos podcast.
Insight No 1: The “1 from 1,000”
If you want a Team of Picassos, or a team of stellar performers, that is,
Sharma said you must be willing to go through 1,000 people to find that one person who has great talent and can
offer a lot of things to the table.
According to him, most of the successful people who have built world-class
companies are not afraid to hire 1,000 people to find that “A performer.” While
your company might look like a revolving door to some, it is a necessary sacrifice you should make if you want to build a
world-class team.
Insight No 2: Hire on mindset, not on history
According to Sharma, one of the secrets to building a stellar team is
focusing on what a person can do, not what he or she has been through. Sure,
it’s very important to check their references and previous employment
records when hiring someone.
However, a person’s personal history shouldn’t deter you from including them
in your team, said Sharma. If their values and ways of doing things match
with yours, there shouldn’t be discussions anymore because you
know you’ve found someone worthy to be part of your team.
Insight No 3: Do deep rigor
If you want a Team of Picassos, Sharma said you shouldn’t hire anyone on the first meeting. You
mustn’t do just one interview.
Instead, you should develop an “incredibly intense” hiring process so
you can easily weed out those who are just saying what you want to hear from those who are truly capable of living up
to their full potential.
Here’s another idea: you should invite the person you want to hire to have a meal with you. According to Sharma,
you can tell a lot about someone by the way they treat the servers. Having a
meal with them will also help you determine if they are punctual, polite, or messy. So what happens when you’ve
created your Dream Team?
Well the most logical thing to do is to nurture them and keep them motivated.
Studies have shown that even if you have assembled the best and the
brightest people in your company into one group, it won’t do your business any good
if they don’t know how to get along and cooperate with one another.
This is where organising team building events comes in. By hosting activities like Sydney Amazing Race, you are giving them the opportunity to bond
with each other and realise the importance of teamwork and
cooperation.
