NOTICE OF RAHUI PLACED ON AMBERFIELD DEVELOPMENTS,

PEACOCKES SUBDIVISION, & SOUTHERN LINKS PROJECT

TAMAHERE AND RUKUHIA NGĀTI MANIAPOTO LANDS KNOWN AS

MANGAKOTUKUTUKU, TIREKE, MANGAWHERO, TE MAIRE AND PUKERIMU

On 19 October 2019 officials from the Sovereign Te Hapu o Te Wakaminenga Waahi o Maniapoto

Tribal Government placed a Rahui Tapu ( https://www.facebook.com/events/2486740794766585/)

over our whenua of Nga hapu o Ngati Maniapoto at Tamahere and Rukuhia also known as

Mangakotukutuku, Tireke, Mangawhero, Te Maire and Pukerimu prohibiting Amberfield

Developments and their agents, Peacocks subdivision, the Southern links project and the

Hamilton City Council from any further development of their housing estate development on the

said whenua.

This development is in direct breach of our Ture Tikanga o Te Whenua, in breach of our

customary rights, native title undisturbed possession, (article 2 Te Tiriti o Waitangi reo text) and in

breach of our constitution He Wakaputanga 1835 the right to govern over, manage and exercise

our sovereignty over our whenua, by the said parties failure to consult with Nga hapu o Ngati

Maniapoto and failure to obtain consent to develop a housing project on our tupuna

ancestral whenua.

The development project is on the historic Hingakaka battle site and home of our tupuna Turongo

and Mahinarangi as well as several Maniapoto pa sites, urupa, many puna wai, ngahere, harakeke

and food resources. Ecological damage on the Waikato river and its environs is imminent

notwithstanding the effects of substantial economic deprivation to Ngāti Maniapoto hapū and

whānau through loss of land use and access to resources. This subdivision is on land that was

illegally taken by the NZ Company Government for a Militia settlement in the 1860s.

The following pānui was published in the Waitomo News on 24 October, 2019 and the Waikato

and the Waikato Times 26 October, 2019;

Before we placed the rahui on the whenua my young Maniapoto nephew Te Kopa Eketone said to

me, “where is my nannies pa?’ He of course was speaking of Nukuhau Pa sited in the area where

Amberfield's housing estate is being developed.

As Maniapoto still retains their mana whenua rangatiratanga the development stands as a gross

injustice to our rangatahi whose ancestral heritage has been seized by false claims of conquered

lands by the NZ government.

The Rahui is in place until further notice or until such times as the aforementioned parties have

consulted and or obtained consent from the Sovereign Nga Hapu of Ngati Maniapoto.

All aforementioned parties whom this notice is addressed to are required to contact Te

Wakaminenga wahi o Maniapoto Tribal Government representatives by 12 November, 2019 in

order that a hui can be arranged for consultation with ngā hapū mana whenua of Ngāti Maniapoto.

Refusal to meet, will cause affected Ngāti Maniapoto hapu to take further action, for effective

remedies.
