Greetings,After a year of what seemed like constantmotion, our reflections on events at The ArtGuild include the many exhibits, classes, pro-grams, plus improvements made to the build-ing. Any mention of these accomplishmentsmust, of course, include recognition of themany Guild members who selflessly donatedtheir time and skills so that others could participate in the various activities offeredthis past year. The Art Guild is an all volun-teer organization, so thank you to those whohelped out! Please join us in making The ArtGuild a special place. Perhaps you might findtime during 2010 to serve on a committee orhelp out at an upcoming event.

This past year, The Art Guild held eightexhibits in the Gallery at Elderfields. We espe-cially thank Gallery Chair, Madeline Meryashfor organizing and overseeing the open juriedshows and members exhibits. We also thankeach Exhibit Chair (Myra Fox, Randy Kraft,Piper Lyman, Madeline Meryash, EileenNeville, Ellen Hallie Schiff, Steven Silberstein,Barbara Silbert, Susan Tiffen and MarioTucci) as well as those who assisted for yourhard work! The resulting exhibits have beenoutstanding. Also a huge success, the popularMembers’ Exhibit, Works’09 was held at theGraphic Eye Gallery last August. Be sure tolook inside for news and photos from theexhibits.

Once The Art Guild was established atElderfields, we began developing an arteducation program for children and adults.With classes continuing to grow, we thankBarbara Stein and Barbara Silbert for organ-izing and setting up the initial program. Thisyear we will offer a five week Winter Sessionbeginning in January, followed by a ten weekSpring Session starting in March. Our mem-bers’ lecture series have been very wellattended, as were the free art workshopsoffered at Art in the Park during HarborFestlast June. We look forward to continuing tooffer quality classes and lectures to ourmembership and the community.

Begun last August, construction on theADA Bathroom is close to completion. Soonwe will begin plans for an accessible ent ra n ce-way as well as outdoor lighting for the park-ing lot and signs on Port Washington Blvd.These projects are funded through theN a ssau Co u nty 2006 Env i ro n m e ntal Bond Ac t.

We also thank Legislator Wayne Wink for allocating additional funds from theCommunity Revitalization Program. Otherrenovations completed this past year includefinishing off the 3rd floor to accommodateadditional studio space; replacement of thecentral air conditioning unit; and to improvethe classroom area, the kitchen ceiling wasremoved, lighting was added and the Steinfamily painted the space.

Lastly, we cannot forget the peoplebehind the scenes who tirelessly contributeto the Guild on an ongoing basis. For printdesign and PR we thank Piper Lyman. Forediting of our newsletter, TAGlines, we thankShelley Holtzman. Our appreciation also goesto Susan Tiffen for updating the web site, andhouse manager, Mario Tucci. We also thankJean-Marie Posner for serving as Treasurerfor the past two years, and outgoing boardmembers Aaron Morgan, Barbara Stein, MarioTucci, and Tani Waheed for their service toThe Art Guild. Thank you all for your dedica-tion to the group.

As the New Year begins, we welcomenew board members Andy Hollander, GingerHendler and Barbara Silbert. At the sametime, we thank all current directors for theirmany and varied contributions to the organi-zation. We look forward to plans for 2010, andhope to see everyone at the Open House onJanuary 10.

October 4 - November 1The show was comprised of over fortypowerful images selected from a largepool of submissions. The competitionawards were judged by noted NationalGeographic photographer Ira Block(www.irablock.com). Mr. Block comment-ed on the exhibit, “The entries are strongimages that make a statement aboutmankind and our interaction with oursurroundings. They are visually excitingand technically strong.”

November 14 - December 13The Art Guild is pleased to announce itsfirst annual juried Nassau County HighSchool Competition and Exhibition. AllNassau County high school students wereinvited to submit works of art for consid-eration in this juried show. Submissionscame from both public and privateschools throughout Nassau County. Fromthose entries, forty works of art wereselected for the exhibit. Howard Rose, anaward winning artist on Long Islandserved as juror of awards. First Place wasawarded to Roslyn High School student,Laura Karpas, for her detailed oil pasteltitled, Tibetan Girl. A beautifully renderedcharcoal drawing titled, The Seeker, byKelly Christian from Floral Park HighSchool was awarded Second Place. GreatNeck student Jenn Kim received ThirdPlace for her stylized acrylic Self-Portrait.An honorable mention was awarded toFloral Park student Niamh Doherty for hercolorfully rendered piece, Peppers. TwoManhasset High School students receivedhonorable mention awards; AlessandraCipriano for her bold and skillfully paintedSelf-Portrait, and Caroline Gray for herdark, rich pencil drawing Pepper Still Life.

TAG WORKS ’09 at The Graphic EyeGallery this past August was a huge suc-cess! Twenty-nine artists participated,and work was sold! The show lookedspectacular thanks to the efforts andexpertise of Eileen Neville. The receptionwas wonderful, very crowded and con-genial, and attracted lots of friends andPort residents alike. It was a great way toshowcase our artists’ work and maintaina presence in the community.

Over fifty members displayed their art atour Second Members Showcase. It was adiverse exhibit including oil, watercolorand acrylic paintings, photography, col-lage, multimedia works and sculptures.The show represented the talents of someof Long Island’s best artists. Connie Foley,a Manhasset resident, served as juror ofawards. She is a working artist currently

represented by theCrysalis Gallery inSouthampton.

For first place, Connieselected the bronzesculpture Camille, byBrookville artist EdithRae Brown. This exquisitesculpture b ea u t i f u l l y

d e p i c ts the full figure of a young womanwith sensuous lines. Second place wasawarded to Linda Ruden for her lightfilled painting, Haitian Woman on Donkey.Ilene Silberstein of Port Washington wasawarded third place for her glowing stilllife oil painting titled, Winter Light.Honorable mentions were awarded toDiane Bares of Port Washington, RalphKeefe of Oceanside, and Bob Stuhmer ofGarden City Park.
