Sunday Reading Reflection
Happy Fifth Sunday of Easter, “As” can be a powerful word. It is little but big. Jesus tells us in the Gospel to love, and this is
truly lovely. We all agree. It is indeed all you need and what makes the world go round, as the songs say. Jesus goes on to say how we are to love. We are to love, how? “As” he loved us. There's the rub. It is hard, five minutes before mass and five minutes after mass, to even pretend to love each other. Just take the idea of patience as your take away. How long do you last after mass, before you lose your patience? How long do you go between times, when you lose your patients? It is like counting your steps. Patience is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. If we don’t have the fruits, we don’t have the Spirit in us. Remember, Christ said, we “should” love as he loved us, not that we “will” or “must.” Trying to love as he loved, only humbles us and shows us our need for his mercy and helps us to be merciful (patient) with others. Try this this week: Instead of counting steps, count how many

Our collection this past weekend was: $4,529.00. Our 2nd collection for this weekend is for utilities.
There is no 2nd collection next weekend.
Did you notice how beautiful our parish lawn looks? You can thank, in part, Fr. Jason. Last year, we discontinued our bi-weekly lawn care services. Fr. Jason stepped up to the plate and voluntarily used his personal lawnmower to mow the lawn each week. As we headed into the winter months, he kept up with the mowing right up until the snow fell. Just before Easter, Confirmation and our First Communions, we had our old lawn care company come in and do a very large clean-up, edging, sweeping, mowing, delivery and installation of mulch, etc. (Beyond Fr. Jason’s area of expertise). It does look amazing, however, it cost us over $4,000.00. If you would like to make a donation to help offset this expense, please feel free! We would love your help with this. As always, this donation will be noted on your year-end tax statement from St. John’s.
I’ve received a few questions about the difference between the Inspiring Hope Campaign that we ran last year, and the Catholic Appeal, that is going on now.
The Inspiring Hope Campaign is a 5-year, Capital Campaign. That means that those people who voluntarily signed up for this, are giving a certain amount of money for the next 5 years in order to help St. John’s take care of capital concerns. In other words, we are going to spend the money on large items (painting the church and rectory that is going on now, paving the church parking lot, etc.) These are big dollar items that will be of value to the church for many years.
The Catholic Appeal is a yearly appeal for money to help the Archdiocese of Boston with their effort to help us out. Each year this goal is based on an average of our previous 3-year Offertory Income multiplied by 10%. So, for the past 3 years our average yearly offertory was: $223,050.00. 10% of that is $22,305.00. That means that this year we need to raise $22,305.00. This money will be sent to the diocese to take care of the many expenses that they have. Last year, the Catholic Appeal was combined with our Inspiring Hope capital campaign. We thought it was too much to have both campaigns going on at the same time, so it was combined. This may be why some people are confused. However, we are now back to our yearly Catholic Appeal.
To date we have received $10,140.00 towards our goal of $22,305.00 for the Catholic Appeal. We are at approximately 45% of our assessment. If we don’t raise the entire $22,305.00, we will be billed by the Archdiocese for the amount that we are short. If we go over our amount, then we will receive a percentage back to the parish. Please pick up an orange envelope to make your donation today
