What is a synonym?

Definitions

Synonym- a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language. Authors use synonyms in their writing so the reader does

not get bored with the same word being used over and over again.

Antonym- a word opposite in meaning to another word. Homograph- two or more words spelled the same but

not necessarily pronounced the same and each having different meanings.

Examples

Synonym- shut -> close Antonym- bad-> good Homograph- bow -> bow

Homophones are words like deer and dear.

What is a Diamante Poem?

A diamante poem is a poem that forms the shape of a diamond. Using a diamante poem you can compare two different items naming the synonym the top half and the antonym on the bottom half.

Diamante Poem

A diamante poem is a 7-lined poem. Line 1: one noun as the subject

Line 2: two adjectives describing the subject in line 1

Line 3: three participles (ending in –ing) telling about the subject in line 1

Line 4: four nouns (the first two related to the subject in line 1 and the second two related to the opposite)

Line 5: three participles (ending in –ing) telling about the opposite

Line 6: two adjectives describing the opposite

Line 7: one noun that is the opposite of the subject in line 1
