A Closer Look at the Rio Grande Valley

Who would like to share something interesting about their culture?

Interesting fact:86 percent of Cameron County, 90 percent of Hidalgo County, 97 percent of Starr County, and 86 percent of Willacy County are Hispanic.

What percent is our county?

Hispanic Influence can be seen all around us in the food we eat, music we listen to, and the art around us.

Don’t believe me?

Take a look at a few pictures found at the McAllen Memorial Library and tell me what culture you think had an influence on these paintings and why?

Think about the colors, style, presentation of the painting before you answer.

So where did the history of the Hispanic influence on the Rio Grade Valley begin?

This is where you assignment kicks in. HURRAY!

Each of you will be in assigned partners. You are to use your library research skills learned from

last lesson to create a Photo Story on the history of Hispanic immigration in the Rio Grande Valley.

Before you start, you will have to complete the library research skills test, (information literacy test), so that we may make sure that you have thought about your search, and know what to do before you start.

Once you have passed the quiz, you and your partner may begin using the resources around you to complete your assignment. Make sure to cite any sources you may have used.
