NEW DELHI, Dec 20:

A Delhi court today tookcognisance of a charge sheetfiled by EnforcementDirectorate (ED) against fiveaccused, including two Italiannationals, in connection with amoney laundering case relatedto Rs 3,600 crore VVIP chopperdeal.

Special CBI Judge V KGupta summoned businessmanGautam Khaitan, who is in jailunder judicial custody, his wifeRitu, Chandigarh-based firmAeromatrix and two Italian men,Carlo Gerosa and GuidoHaschke, as accused in the casefor January 19 after taking cog-nisance of the charge sheet.

They were chargesheeted by

ED for the offences under theprovisions of Prevention ofMoney Laundering Act(PMLA).

Meanwhile, the court alsodismissed bail plea of Khaitan, the lone accused who has beenarrested in the case.

During the hearing on thebail plea, Khaitan's lawyer P KDubey had argued that com-plaint filed by ED was not com-plete and his client should beenlarged on bail.

Countering his submissions,ED's prosecutor Naveen KumarMatta had submitted that furtherprobe was going on and thecomplaint filed against Khaitanand others was complete.

Khaitan was the first person

to be arrested in September thisyear by the ED in the chopperdeal case in which CBI is alsorunning a parallel probe.

ED had earlier alleged in thecourt that Khaitan was "activelyinvolved" in the illegal transac-tions relating to proceeds ofcrime and he was one of the ben-eficiaries of the entire deal.

ED is probing the case inwhich 70 million euros (Rs 360crore) were allegedly paid askickbacks.

It had earlier submitted thatKhaitan was on the board ofAeromatrix which was allegedlya front firm for the financialdealings.

ED had lodged a case in Julythis year against Khaitan, formerIAF chief S P Tyagi and 19 oth-ers in the VVIP chopper dealcase to probe the alleged kick-backs.

The agency had claimed thatKhaitan had resigned as one ofthe directors in Aeromatrix afterItalian Police started its probe inthe chopper deal.

Khaitan was earlier ques-tioned by CBI in this case. EDhad lodged a case in this dealunder PMLA, taking cognisanceof a more than a year-old CBIFIR.

ED has booked Tyagi, someof his family members,European nationals CarloGerosa, Christian Michel andGuido Haschke, six firms--Italy-based Finmeccanica, UK-based AgustaWestland, Chandi-garh-based IDS Infotech andAeromatrix, two companiesbased in Mauritius and Tunisia, and unnamed persons in itscriminal complaint.

The supply of 12 VVIP heli-copters from AgustaWestlandcame under the scanner after theItalian authorities had allegedthat bribes were paid by thecompany to clinch the deal.(PTI)
