Movie with strong message showingA MOVIE that aims to break the silence on honour violence against women and girls will show in Darwin next week.

Honor Diaries is part of aninternational movement to save women and girls from human rights abuses.

Honour-based violence is aviolent crime or incident

committed to protect or defend the honour of a family or community.

Victims of honour violenceare usually targeted because their behaviour violates cultural or religious norms and is seen to bring shame on to the family or community.

On Saturday, March 8 –

International Women’s Day – the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT will host a community screening of Honor Diaries as part of a worldwide launch of the film.

The film will be shown in the Theatrette at the museum on Conacher St in Fannie Bay at 7pm

IN celebration of Clean Up Aus-

tralia Day on March 2, a Darwin en-

vironmental artist will exhibit a

work of art in Sydney constructed

from beach litter.

The artwork, commissioned by

the Commonwealth Bank of Aus-

tralia for display at its six-star rated

eco-friendly Sydney head office, is

by Charles Darwin University Vis-

ual Arts Lecturer and postgraduate

student John Dahlsen.

He said aside from creating ar-

tistic value, using recycled materi-

als in his art added an element of

social responsibility.

“Through environmental art I

strive to improve our relationship

with nature,” Mr Dahlsen said.

“Whether it examines our natu-

ral environment or adds cultural

value to a landscape, environmen-

tal art is used to encourage people

to appreciate everything and any-

thing natural.”

Comprising 12 sculptures made

from recycled styrofoam, the ma-

terials for the piece, entitled ‘White

Foam Totems’, were collected by

Mr Dahlsen and Commonwealth

Bank staff volunteers during the

2011 Clean Up Australia Day rub-

bish collection in Sydney.

This year marks 25 years since

Ian Kiernan created Clean Up Syd-

ney Harbour Day, which a year

later, in 1990, evolved into Clean

Up Australia Day.

The exhibition recognises the

25th anniversary of the Sydney

event and kicks off celebrations in

the lead-up to the 25th anniversary

for Clean Up Australia Day in 2015.

Mr Dahlsen has had 200 exhibi-

tions. This one will run until March

3 at Customs House, Sydney.
