There are many things we can do tosupport our children at home toencourage learning over the summer.Summer Learning experiences should beengaging and meaningful for students.Below are some helpful tips:

The Academic Standards, oressential skills, provided in thisguide address all of the importantcontent knowledge studentsshould know to be successfulentering into Grade 6. Essentialskills are provided for EnglishLanguage Arts, Mathematics,Science, and Social Studies.

READING & ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

ESSENTIAL SKILLSDetermine the meaning of words or phrases as they are usedin text, including figurativeDetermine a theme from details in text and explain howthe details support the themeUse text structure to determine two or more main ideas of atextUse Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to themeaning of a word

The Georgia Standards of Excellence require that students gain, evaluate, and presentincr easingly complex information, ideas and evidence through listening and speakingas well as through media. The standards recognize that students must be able to useformal English in their writing and speaking but that they must also be able to makeinformed, skillful choices among the many ways to express themselves throughlanguage (gadoe.org)

MATHEMATICS

ESSENTIAL SKILLSUse parentheses, brackets and braces to evaluate numericalexpressionsPerform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimalsto hundredthsSolve word problems involving addition and subtraction of unlikefractionsApply and extend previous understandings of multiplication anddivision to multiply fractionsGeometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relatevolume to multiplication and to addition

SCIENCECompare and contrast the Earth’s crust, mantle, inner andouter core, including temperature, density, thickness, andcompositionClassify rocks by their formation and describe how rockschange through geologic processes in the rock cycleDescribe the uses and conservation of various naturalresources and how they impact the Earth

The Georgia Mathematics standards are designed to help learners achieve a balanceamong concepts, skills, and problem solving. They provide clear expectations forcurriculum, instruction, assessment, and student work. The standards stress rigorousconcept development and real-world applications while maintaining astrong emphasis on computational and procedural skills. (gadoe.org)

SOCIAL STUDIES

ESSENTIAL SKILLSExplain the impact of poverty, the war on drugs, and migration to theUnited States on Latin AmericaExplain the impact of environmental issues in Latin AmericaDescribe factors that influence economic growth and examine theirpresence or absence in AustraliaCompare and contrast different types of trade barriers, such as tariffs,quotas, and embargosExplain environmental issues in EuropeCompare how traditional, command, and market economies answer theeconomic questions of 1-what to produce, 2-how to produce, and 3-forwhom to produce

The Social Studies Frameworks provide one way that teachers, schools, and districtsmight organize and teach the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) within units.Units and frameworks align to connecting themes and enduring understandings thattranscend units and courses. Ultimately, the enduring understandings are whatstudents will take from a course that applies to life beyond school. All units andframeworks are designed to promote inquiry. (gadoe.org)

The Science Frameworks provide one way that teachers, schools, and districts mightorganize and teach the Georgia Standards of Excellence withing units. Frameworksinclude curriculum maps, pacing guides, and instructional segments. All segmentsare phenomenon-based and are structured in a 5E format. In addition, eachinstructional segment includes dedicated supports for struggling learners.(gadoe.org)

SUGGESTED SUMMER READING

SUMMER READING INFORMATIONFor students who are learning to read, the recommendation is topractice reading with an adult for 20 minutes per day. Stronger readerscan either read independently, or to an adult for 20 minutes per day. Allbooks have been curated in a digital district platform calledMackinVIA.
