Facts and Figures! - President of Sudan is Omar Bashir.- Sudan is the largest country of Africa and located in northeast Africa.

- Tenth largest country in the world by area.

- An area of 2,505,808 kilometer square.- World’s largest river which is the river Nile, passes through Sudan.

- Population of 42,272,000,- A nominal GDP of $58.029 Billion

Found in a city called Nubia which comes on the way to Port Sudan from Omdurman.- Older Pyramids than the pyramids of Egypt.

- About 220 Pyramids where constructed over the period of few hundred years to serve as tombs for kings and queens.

- The Kings and Queens where placed in a granite coffin which weighted 15.5 tons.

HISTORY

HistoryThe Nubian King of Sudan.Sudan was known as “Kush” by the Egyptians. That was 60,000 years ago.In the 8th century it was ruled by the Egyptians.

Later on the capital was named Khartoum which is the current capital of Sudan.

Independence!

Independence!- In the 1890s, the British sought to re-establish

their control over Sudan, once more officially in the name of the Egyptian Khedive, but in actuality treating the country as British imperial territory.

- Egyptian Khedive are similar to Egyptian kings, “SULTAN”

Independence!

On December 19, 1955, the Sudanese parliament, under Azhari's leadership, unanimously adopted a declaration of independence; on January 1, 1956, Sudan became an independent republic. Azhari called for the withdrawal of foreign troops and requested the condominium powers to sponsor a plebiscite in advance of the scheduled date.

Independence!The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), based in southern Sudan, was formed in May 1983. Finally, in June 1983, the Sudanese government under President Gaafar Nimeiry abrogated the Addis Ababa Peace Agreement (A.A.A.).

CULTURE!- Sudanese culture consists of behaviors, practices and

beliefs of 578 different tribes, communicating in 145 different languages and one famous language is Arabic.

- Music-Sudan has a rich and unique musical culture. Most of the Music lyrics are Arabic poems.

-Sports-One of the Famous sports they play is Basketball. And many of the players from Sudan have played in the American National Basketball Association.

Soccer! They call it Football. Which actually makes sense! Khartoum State League is considered to be the oldest soccer league in the whole of Africa.

-Clothing-The clothing differs in every part of Sudan but there are two common clothing of Sudan called the jalabiya (Men) and Tuab ( Women).

-Education-- Most of the schools in Sudan in the early times were

Public school. But in the past few years there has been a lot of development of Private school.

- Few of the Private schools are Khartoum Diplomatic School (KDS) which follows the British syllabus from the University of Cambridge and provided the high school certificate called IGCSE or O-levels.

Recently a new school has been built called the Khartoum international Community school but knows as KICS. It focus on IGCSE as well as International Baccalaureate (IB)

-Railroads-Sudan has 4,725 kilometers of narrow-gauge, single-track railroads that serve the northern and central portions of the country.

TRANSPORTATION-Highways-

- Sudan's road system totaled between 20,000 and 25,000 kilometers. That total includes both Paved and Unpaved Roads.

Transportation- Aviation-

- Sudan has over 88 Airports out of which 14 have paved runway and 73 have unpaved runways.

- In 1947 the government started a company called Sudan Airways Company which operated domestic flights only, But it now travels to Saudi Arabia, Nonstop to London, Dubai and many more Places.

Darfur

- Started in the year 1970.- The rebels accused the government for

neglecting Darfur economically.

- When Oil was found in Sudan, Khartoum started getting developed and the rebels known as JEM started the conflict again as they wanted Darfur to get developed as well. But actually they were young teens from Chad.

New Developments

The 4 main new developments are:

- Mogran City with Business District

- Khartoum New International Airport

- Marawi Hydro-electrical Dam

- Burj-Al- Fateh (Burj means tower, and al fateh means open)

A Five Star Hotel.Completed on September 1st 2007. A project of $80 million by the Libyan government.21 Floors with 230 Luxury rooms and 6 Restaurants.
