ORIGINS

• “The father of stress research” was Dr. Hans Selye. He was also the first person to coin the term “stress” in medical circles in the 1930’s and 40’s.

• He defined stress as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”.

• To him, stress wasn’t necessarily good or bad. It was just a response to changing stimuli around us.

DEFINITION

Stress is a dynamic condition in

which an individual is confronted with an opportunity, constraint, or demand related to what he/she desires and for which the outcome is perceived to be both uncertain and important.

In psychology, stress is a feeling of strain and pressure.

EUSTRESS DISTRESS

Eustress

• Eustress is the good stress that motivates you to continue working.

• It is this stress that helps us to continue to be happy, motivated, challenged and productive.

• Hence, eustress contribute to outstanding performance and output.

Distress

• Distress or bad stress, is when the good stress becomes too much to bear or cope with.

• Distress can lead to poor decision making. Also it can bring in various physiological and behavioral symptoms.

• It can break a person’s potential success and fulfillment in life. It is one of the main killers of winning and success.

CAUSES

Common Causes:

• Bereavement• Family problems• Financial matters• Illness• Job issues• Lack of time• Moving home• Relationships (including divorce)

Other Causes:• Abortion• Becoming a mother or a father• Conflicts in the workplace• Driving in bad traffic• Fear of crime• Losing your job• Miscarriage• Noisy neighbors• Overcrowding• Pollution• Pregnancy• Retirement• Too much noise• Uncertainty

METHODS TO OVERCOME STRESS

1) Figure out where the stress is coming from.

2) Consider what you can control - and work on that.

3) Do what you love.

4) Manage your time well.

5) Create a toolbox of techniques.

6) Pick off the negotiables from your plate.

7) Are you leaving yourself extra vulnerable to stress?

8) Preserve good boundaries.

9) Realize there’s a difference between worrying and caring.

10)Embrace mistakes—or at least don’t drown in perfectionism.

STRESS AT WORK PLACE

• "Workplace stress" is the harmful physical and emotional responses that can happen when there is a conflict between job demands on the employee and the amount of control an employee has over meeting these demands.

• In general, the combination of high demands in a job and a low amount of control over the situation can lead to stress.

• Stress in the workplace can have many origins or come from one single event.

WORK- LIFE BALANCE

• Work–life balance is a concept including proper prioritizing between "work" (career and ambition) and "lifestyle"(health, pleasure, leisure, family and  spiritual development/meditation).

• According to Jeff Davidson, "Work-life balance is the ability to experience a sense of control and to stay productive and competitive at work while maintaining a happy, healthy home life with sufficient leisure".

• Counselling often utilises stress management techniques to reduce stress.

• These techniques can be about learning about our behaviours and reactions that lead to stressful situations or they can involve learning the practice of physical and mental relaxation.
