60 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE OF LOGISTICS AND FORWARDING
 www.borjes.com
60 years – from small beginnings…
2007 marks 60 years of Börjes, and I can’t think of a more appropriate way of introducing a jubilee magazine than by thanking all our past and present customers and suppliers for placing your confidence in us over the past six decades. I would also like to thank all employees past and present. My father, Börje Johansson, died in 1988, and was devoted to his lifework to the end. But he lives on in the memories of employees and customers, and I would say that the genuine spirit of a family business, dating from the time when the office was still housed in my parents’ home in the 1950s, endures in the company to this day. We are grateful for the foundations Börje gave the company and for his down-to-earth service philosophy, as these factors have enabled us to develop into the company we are today.
The years since I joined the company in the 1970s have been incredibly eventful. I’m thinking among other things of the difference in horsepower between our lorries now and then, environmental issues, and the first mobile phone, computer and fax machine. And developments continue apace with GPS, digital tachographs and different environmental classifications for engines. Change is demanding, but challenging and stimulating too. In the course of our journey we at Börjes Logistik & Spedition have learnt to adapt to change, demand and the requirements made of the sector. This has made us into a modern, environmentally conscious and full-service forwarding and logistics company with an international orientation.
The enlarged EU offers exciting business opportunities and we see it as our duty to be able to help our customers to do business in the new Europe. This is reflected in the enquiring and enthusiastic approach to this work demonstrated by the company’s competent staff in Nybro and at the branch in Erfurt, Germany.
At the moment we are witnessing a restructuring of the transport sector, with a small number of logistics giants operating increasingly through contractors, resulting in ever increasing anonymity and complexity. This is why we believe that, in its capacity as an independent player with a high level of customer focus and broad-based competence, Börjes Logistik & Spedition will continue to have an important role to play in the future. With the platform and organisation we have built up over the years and the significant expansion of the last decade behind us, we are now ready to meet the demands and challenges of the market.
As I look back over the past 60 years and ahead to the future, I would describe myself as proud of what we have achieved but not satisfied. During the year ahead we will raise our profile on the market, partly by means of this jubilee magazine and partly by means of our new website. I look forward to being part of and building a team which will continue to challenge the market and make Börjes Logistik & Spedition one of the leading players in Europe in the decades ahead.

Börjes has long been a well-regarded name in
transport circles. From the outset in 1947 the
company has been known for good service.
Although the company has grown and diversified
over the years, we have succeeded in maintaining
the same level of personal commitment to our
customers as in the early days.
“The ‘big little company’ sums us up well,” says Roland
Johansson, CEO and owner of Börjes Logistik & Spedition.
“Today we are a successful European carrier with
around 60 employees, but the personal and close contact
with our customers is still at the heart of our business.
Our customers know us as a small family company with
which they feel secure. At the same time we have the
network to execute complex transport assignments and
the expertise to design total solutions.
Börje Johansson started his haulage company in Nybro in
1947, with one vehicle and one employee. The business
took off, and in the 1950s the company had six vehicles
and 12 employees. Börje was a far-sighted entrepreneur
and during a visit to the USA in the 1960s had the idea of
building a modern terminal in Nybro. The subsidiary
Börjes Miljötransporter started in the 1970s.
The company was the first in south-east Sweden to
offer temperature-controlled transport. 1992 saw the start
of a focused investment in overseas transport when the
operating company Börjes Logistik & Spedition opened a
branch in Germany. This proved such a success that in
1996 Börje’s son, Roland Johansson, decided to convert
Börjes Logistik & Spedition into an independent company,
while his sister Gunvor continued running the rest of the
business. The company enjoyed growing success and, in
the summer of 2002, Börjes Logistik & Spedition moved
to a new facility in Nybro. In the same year Roland was
named Entrepreneur of the Year in the municipality of
Nybro. The new facility has provided a first-rate setting for
the company’s expansion, boasting a magnificent terminal
ideal for services within third-party logistics and plenty of
space for the dynamic traffic management function.
Today Börjes Logistik & Spedition has around 60
employees based in Nybro and Erfurt in Germany, and 10
or so quality-conscious carriers on fixed contracts.
According to Roland, one key factor in the company’s
success is that it is an independent transport company,
free to create flexible transport solutions based on the
customer’s needs. The company has grown in a
purposeful but measured way with a view to broadening
its expertise and services, at the same time as retaining
the level of service and quality which made Börjes
famous.
“The Börjes brand has always stood for service and
personal contact, but we can always do that bit more.
This year, to help customers and partners to get to know
us even better, we are publishing this jubilee magazine
and launching a new, more personal and customer-
oriented website,” finishes Roland.

Börjes Logistik & Spedition is a many-sided
company. Over the course of 60 years serving our
customers, we have managed to become a
successful European carrier with our own terminal
used partly for third-party logistics and have built
up a well-established network with other
independent transport companies providing global
coverage for their logistics services.
Is there anything the company can’t do, I ask Lars-Åke
Åkesson, head of sales and marketing at Börjes Logistik &
Spedition.
“In principle, no. That’s why we are a little unwilling to
answer when we are asked what services we offer. Some
companies approach the customer and say ‘This is what
we offer – is this something you need?’ We look at things
the other way round: we listen carefully to the customer,
assess their needs and piece together the solution on this
basis.” Being an independent player is a strength,
according to Lars-Åke. Being in the position to select the
best solution and partner for a specific shipment
increases the level of flexibility and quality.
“At the end of the day the only limit is our
imagination, and ours knows no bounds,” he smiles.
Traffic managemenT aT The hearT
The traffic management department is at the heart of
Börjes L & S. This is where the shipments are planned
and this is where customers most often encounter the
company’s renowned service-mindedness. Eight people
work in traffic management: five at the office in Nybro and
three at the office in Erfurt in Germany. The shipments
may involve anything from everyday goods to housings,
car parts, industrial springs, refuse aggregate and
pharmaceuticals – in other words, anything which can be
transported on a loading platform. When a booking is
made it is entered in the system and then the goods are
scheduled onto the most appropriate vehicle, depending
on spare capacity and route plan.
“For both financial and environmental reasons it is
important that the vehicles are driven empty as little as
possible,” explains Ulf Skånberg, who has worked as
traffic manager at the company since 1996 and really
enjoys his job.
“All the planning and piecing together is challenging,
dynamic and creative. You feel that the customers really
appreciate the fact that we focus on their specific needs
and are with them all the way from booking to delivery.”
The Terminal
The terminal is the hub for large quantities of import and
export goods which come here for transhipment. We also
offer services within third-party logistics.
“The terminal is the customer’s warehouse: we take
care of all stock handling and when they receive an order
we arrange distribution,” explains terminal manager Björn
‘Böna’ Johansson.
Börjes Logistik & Spedition also takes care of parcel
distribution in the county of Kalmar on behalf of several
companies, including Pan Nordic Logistics.
“These can be fast pucks, but we work well as a team
and definitely play in the first division,” says ‘Böna’, the
Swedish hockey veteran.
explosive is expansive
ADR shipments have long been one of the company’s
core competences. ADR is the umbrella term for shipment
of dangerous or explosive goods and hazardous waste.
Stringent requirements are made of the special vehicles
used, and the training is exhaustive. All Börjes L & S’
drivers have ADR training and most also have Class 1 cer-
tification for transporting explosives. Börjes L & S is
Europe’s largest road carrier of explosive goods for civilian
and military purposes. Civilian purposes include
construction work and road building, while military
purposes can be anything from old supplies for
destruction to completely new military equipment. Kalle
Darnell, who has worked on ADR shipments at Börjes L &
S since 1995, explains that shipments of explosives are
subject to stringent requirements in terms of punctuality,
secrecy and safety.
“Delivering precisely in accordance with the
agreement is absolutely vital. As is proximity to the goods:
the traffic manager with whom the customer books the
consignment must have direct contact with the driver and
control over the shipment from start to finish. This sounds
complicated, although actually it’s the same service we
offer all our customers whether we are transporting
explosives or everyday goods.

offered by Börjes Logistik & Spedition. Our philosophy,
wherever possible, is to safeguard local alternatives where
they can meet our criteria and are competitive on a number
of fronts,” says marketing manager Johnny Jarhall.

Most of these shipments are made with the help of Börjes
Logistik & Spedition, and agreements have been in place
for some time regulating the shipments.
“Börjes handles the majority of our shipments which fit
with their routes to Scandinavia and Germany, for example.
As they are a close partner, they always get first refusal on
shipments to other destinations. In addition, we also have
intermediate storage facilities for the largest and bulkiest
robots at Börjes, and they take care of logistics too.”
Johnny Jarhall cites proximity and personal contact as
the most important and most fundamental components of
this extensive collaboration.
“We know each other well and have long recognised
that the people at Börjes are committed and set great
store by everything going to plan.”

With extensive production and sales activities
throughout the Nordic region, Sto Scandinavia AB
has consignments of plaster and concrete on the
road virtually all the time.
“The majority of our import shipments both from suppliers
and the main warehouse in Germany are handled by
Börjes Logistik & Spedition. To some degree this
collaboration also covers deliveries to our various
companies within the Nordic region,” explains logistics
manager Bengt Sandegren.
Three main areas
Sto Scandinavia AB, which was founded in 1987 and
has approx. 160 employees, is part of the German group
Sto AG, one of the world’s leading suppliers of insulating
plaster systems.
Bengt Sandegren explains that Sto Scandinavia AB
is active within three main areas: plaster facade systems
including insulating layers, concrete renovation and
flooring for parking decks.
“The group comprises both production and sales
activities. Our warehouses and suppliers are primarily in
Germany, and so there are many shipments both to the
head office in Linköping and other offices and sales outlets
in Sweden and subsidiaries in the rest of the Nordic region.”
meeTing The cusTomer’s needs
The products – plaster and dry concrete – are
transported both in buckets and sacks. There are also a
number of other components in the plaster facade
systems, for example element, fabric and edgings.
“Because we are dealing with large volumes, we
always try to drive with full loads to nearby destinations,”
explains Bengt Sandegren.
He stresses that it is not the financial aspects alone
which are behind the extensive collaboration which has
existed between Sto Scandinavia AB and Börjes Logistik
& Spedition over almost 20 years.
“It’s more to do with flexibility and a high level of
service. They meet the customer’s needs and make
sure that everything works as well as possible.”

Being a carrier of dangerous goods for Orica
Mining Services requires both special competence
and extra equipment. Börjes Logistik & Spedition
can supply both.
“Börjes is a partner that suits our business. They are
competent and have many years’ experience of issues
relating to safety and transport of ADR goods,” says
logistics manager Anders Sjörud of Orica Mining Services
in Gyttorp outside Nora.
world-leading supplier
Since summer 2006 Dyno Nobel Sweden AB has been
part of the worldwide Orica group.
“The merger of Dyno Nobel’s operations in Europe
and South America with Orica Mining Services means that
Orica is now the world’s biggest supplier within the
explosives sector,” explains Anders Sjörud.
However, collaboration with Börjes on ADR shipments
goes back much further, having started earlier in the
decade.
“It started when we began to supplement our own
production with purchases from foreign suppliers. The
consignments Börjes transports for us are mainly from
suppliers in Finland, Poland and Germany to our main
warehouses in Sweden and Norway.
gps moniToring
Transporting dangerous goods requires both specially trai-
ned staff and special equipment.
“Among other things, we require GPS monitoring of
all shipments and we require all drivers to undergo our
own training course and have a good knowledge of the
goods they are transporting. Some countries also have
their own regulations which the carrier must meet.
Each month Börjes operates between 50 and 60 ADR
shipments to and from various destinations for Orica
Mining Services.
“We are very satisfied with the collaboration and have
recently extended the agreement for another few years,”
says Anders Sjörud.

Each week several consignments of envelopes and
bags leave Bong Ljungdahl Sverige AB’s production
unit in Nybro for associates and customers around
Europe.
“The products we manufacture in Nybro – including
envelopes, bags and slightly more sophisticated printed
packages – are primarily intended for export to customers
in Europe and forwarding to our associates, for example in
Germany. We have long used Börjes Logistik & Spedition for
these shipments,” explains site manager Åke Adén.

Following the merger in 1997 of the two big competitors
on the Scandinavian envelope market – Bong in
Kristianstad and Ljungdahl in Nybro – Bong Ljungdahl has
become one of Europe’s largest envelope manufacturers
with an annual production capacity of approx. 18 billion
envelopes.
The group, which is headquartered in Kristianstad,
has a total of 13 European production sites located mainly
in the Nordic region, Germany, the United Kingdom and
the Benelux countries.
Ljungdahl started operations in Nybro back in the
mid-19th century and has long collaborated with Börjes
Logistik & Spedition.
“Börjes has carried out transport services of varying
scope for Ljungdahl more or less since it started its
haulage business,” says Åke Adén.

Åke Adén highlights the high degree of flexibility

factor in the successful collaboration.
