NetID

At an internet cafe or other public computer...o Be careful!o These computers can be very insecure, with key-

loggers or other malicious softwareo If you must log in, don't save the password and

don't forget to log out!o Remember: NU will never ask for your password!

Viruses and Malware• Frequent sources of harmful software

o Pornography

o Streaming illegal video (e.g. SurftheChannel, Tudou, MegaVideo)

o P2P programs (e.g. Bittorrent, Limewire, Kazaa, Bearshare)

o Internet gaming sites (e.g. Wildtangent)

o Free screensavers, wallpapers, coupons, etc.

o Ad-heavy Web sites

Viruses and Malware

• If you think you think your PC is infected:o Run an anti-virus scan (Symantec, Microsoft Security

Essentials, AVG, etc.) www.it.northwestern.edu/software/sav/

o Run an anti-spyware scan (Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc.) www.it.northwestern.edu/security/spyware/

• If symptoms persist, the Support Center is open over the summero Call us at 847-491-HELP (4357)o Walk-in support for virus removal available by

appointment

VPN

• For access to Northwestern resources while off-campus, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connectiono Library resources, timesheet entry, etc.

• A VPN connection can also be used to encrypt your connection when connecting to unsecured wireless locations (e.g. hotels)

• See the instructions on configuring VPN from NUIT's Web site (Windows, Mac, or your mobile device)

• Learn about NetID expiration• Manage your @u account• Listserv subscriptions

Learn About NetID Expiration

• NetIDs expire four months (120 days) after student status expires in CAESARo For most graduating seniors, this will be in November

• For students with a legacy @northwestern.edu account, forwarding from this account to your @u will expire after one year

• Before NetID expiration, be sure to take advantage of the of the following:o Obtain copies of your transcripts via CAESAR

o Complete any research (e.g. library electronic resources)

delete it after being forwarded

Listserv Subscriptions

• Your listserv subscriptions will not expire• Must manually remove yourself• Use the interface at https://listserv.it.northwestern.edu

while your NetID is still valid

2.Type the message: UNSUBSCRIBE listname

• If you lose your phone, someone could gain access to all the sensitive data stored inside.

• Don’t use your phone to send confidential e-mails or messages

• All phones can be protected with a security code

• iPhones can be set to wipe all sensitive data after 10 unsuccessful tries to unlock it
