SOIL STABILIZATIONSOIL STABILIZATION

By: Jeric Paraso

What is Soil Stabilization?

DEFINITION:

Chemical or mechanical treatment designed to increase the stability of a soil mass and improve its engineering properties.

PURPOSE OF SOIL STABILISATION:

*strength improvement

*Dust control

*Soil waterproofing

SOIL STABILIZATION TECHNIUES

1) PHYSICAL TECHNIQUES

*Compaction *Altering size distribution

*Drying

A) COMPACTION

*Increases density

*Increases strength

*Reduces permeability

B) ALTERING SIZE DISTRIBUTION:

C) DRYING:

*Performance of soil can be greatly improved by drying in sun or oven

2) PHYSIC0-CHEMICAL TECHNIQUES

Combination of chemical & physical reactions.

Materials known as stabilizers: Lime

Cement

Bitumen

LIME STABILIZATION PROCEDURE.

•Pulverization and scarification •Lime content

•Uniformity of mixing

•Compaction

•curing

LIME-SOIL STABILIZATION USES

* Improve the workability and load-bearing characteristics of soil.

* Used to dry wet soils at construction site.* can substantially increase the stability,

impermeability, and load-bearing capacity of the sub-grade.

Lime

CEMENT STABILIZATION PROCEDURE •Pulverization •Cement content

•Moisture content

•Uniformity of mixing

•Compaction

•Curing.

CEMENT-SOIL STABILIZATION USES

•Cement stabilized soils usually stronger than lime stabilized soils.

•Similar uses to lime stabilized soils.

Portland Cement

BITUMINOUS STABILIZATION:

Refers to a process by which a controlled amount of bituminous material is thoroughly mixed with an existing soil or aggregate material to form a stable base or wearing surface.

Bitumen increases the cohesion and load-bearing capacity of the soil and renders it resistant to the action of water.

Benefits of Bituminous Stabilization

• • Improvements to the driving surface and in safety

• • Virtual elimination of dust problems • • Reduction in the loss of aggregate

Potential Disadvantage to Bituminous Stabilization

• • Potential to induce higher driving speeds and thus, potentially dangerous curves in existing geometry.
