Dear Parishioners,
Welcome back from your summer holidays! Before I get to upcoming events, I must express my gratitude to those who labored during the summer months on behalf of the parish. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus, our gazebo was renovated. The Knights power washed, hammered, sawed, and stained it into shape! I also appreciate the efforts of all who weeded, planted, and watered our parish gardens. I think we must be the only parish in the Archdiocese with a garden containing artificial flowers with price tags attached! Finally, I am grateful to the picnic committee for another successful Parish Picnic and an abundant supply of my favorite dog—the hot dog!
There are plenty of events coming up in the next few months to keep everyone occupied:
On Saturday, September 24th our St. Vincent de Paul Society will sponsor their second annual Friends of the Poor Walk. This is one of two major fundraising events for the Vincentians. Please make every effort to be present. Walk, sponsor a walker, or just support the event with your presence.
On Sunday, September 25th we will be having a Youth Mass at 5PM in the chapel. All children in grades 6 -9 are invited and encouraged to Pray and Play! The Knights of Columbus are very generously providing a pizza supper after the Mass. Bring your own anchovies--BYOA!
Blessing of the Animals will take place on Sunday, October 2nd at 1:00 PM. Bring your dogs, cats, reptiles, bugs, and rocks. I’ll be watching from the safety of my room!
Sunday, October 9th is the Rosary of Faith immediately following the 11AM Mass. As Fr. Fehrenbach, CSSR, used to say: “You can’t saw you can’t because you’re His mother, and you won’t say you won’t because you’re my mother. So you will—won’t you?
October 15/16th is Stewardship Sunday. Our parish organizations will be represented in the Church Hall. Hopefully, refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited to the hall after Mass to learn more about what our parish has to offer and to get involved! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE 9AM MASS THAT SUNDAY WILL BE CELEBRATED AT ST. THOMAS AND NOT AT ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON CHURCH.
On Saturday, October 22nd the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring an Octoberfest. Although details will follow at a later date, please mark your calendars now! How long can you hold a stein full of beer with your outstretched arm?
On Sunday, November 6th the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring their annual Soup and Conversation. I don’t think this event needs any explanation, but I have yet to find an adventurous person who cooks pepper pot soup!
Saturday, November 19th at 4:30PM is the Parish Memorial Mass—a time to remember and pray for those who have died in the last twelve months.
The Christmas Bazaar will be held on November 27th from 9:00 AM—2:00 PM. Shop till you drop! DON’T FORGET MAY 7TH 2017--THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CHURCH. PLEASE
GET THE WORD OUT TO ALUMNI AND FORMER PARISHONERS.
Speaking of social events, I think they provide us with a good opportunity to welcome the stranger in our midst. As I was speaking to Mrs. Smith (not her real name) at the picnic, we were approached by another lady who was looking for a seat. Mrs. Smith informed her that the table was saved for her family. The message was clear: you are not welcome here; find someone else to sit with! I was able to track that lady down. Fortunately, she was waiting for a friend, and they found another table. Imagine if this woman were a visitor to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. Imagine if she were not Catholic but interested in the Catholic Faith. What a lost opportunity that would have been!
Before I conclude, here is the latest news:
The Indian Eastern Rite Catholic Community that was renting SEAS on Sundays has moved to the Assumption Parish in Feasterville in anticipation of the eventual sale of the SEAS property.
The rectory at SEAS is now occupied by a renter. If you see lights on in the rectory, please don’t call the police! The Bucks County Intermediate Unit that administers the Head Start Program and rented the first floor of our school has moved to
Southampton. This is a loss of $5,800 a month beginning October 1! In addition, the BCIU also paid a good part of the school utility bills. This is a major loss of income for the parish. Please pray that we find a new renter soon.
The collections have declined about $600 a week after the loss of the appeal to the Congregation of the Clergy to keep SEAS open and the termination of Mr. Hank Wajda’s employment as organist at SEAS. This is sure to increase our deficit, but hopefully we can recoup it from the sale of the SEAS property. The lack of financial support on the part of the former parishioners of SEAS only validates the decision of the Archdiocese to close that parish, and confirms my decision to sell the property once the appeal is concluded.
Welcome back! Get involved! Support your parish with your time, talent, and treasure, and pray for a return of the majority to the
practice of their Faith! God Bless, Fr. David

Dear Parents and Guardians of Our Grade School Children:
Our young people are the future of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and our Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The closing of our grammar school was a very sad day for the entire community. The school connected the children more closely to our parish. Our young people are now scattered over a number of Catholic, public, and private schools.
Recently the idea surfaced of getting them together
by means of a Youth Mass. This first Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, September 25th at 5:00 PM in the chapel which is attached to the rectory. The Knights of Columbus have graciously volunteered to sponsor a pizza supper after the Liturgy. Since the Mass is primarily for the benefit of the children, and since space in the chapel is limited, I am not opening it up to the parish at large—at least this first time.
I ask you to please encourage your children in
grades 6-9 to attend and provide them with the necessary transportation. Please also email Rebecca Gutherman at rgutherman@msjacad.org to confirm your children’s willingness to participate in our first Pray and Play. Thanks in advance for your support!
God Bless Fr. David
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is for persons who have been Baptized but have no affiliation with any church, who were never Baptized, were Baptized as Catholics but were never fully initiated through the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation, or for Catholics who want a better understanding of our faith. If you or someone you know is interested in inquiring about the Catholic faith, maybe even considering membership in the Catholic Church, then we invite you to join us as we begin our new season of RCIA classes. For more information, please contact the Parish Office at (215) 788-2989 or Deacon John Gallagher at (215) 245-7897 or Bob Gutherman at (215) 788-5410.

25th Sunday in Ordinary Times
In today’s epistle, St Paul tells us to pray for all those in authority that we may “lead a quiet and tranquil life”. As we draw closer to Election Day, let’s pray more fervently for our elected officials. And let’s be sure to form our consciences in preparation for Election Day that we may elect wise and godly leaders. The CD’s/books/booklets in our Resource Display offer an easy way. Pick up something today and commit to spending a little time each day getting to know the faith on a deeper level and drawing closer to Christ. And then pass it on to friends and family! Thank you for your generous donations that help to support the Mission of Stewardship: A Mission of Faith and Lighthouse Catholic Media to bring these resources to more parishes. A Message from the St Vincent de Paul Society
In today’s Gospel we see that prudent decisiveness means that we recognize that all our choices in daily living are really choices for eternal life. Admission into heaven is something money cannot buy. The only currency that has any value to secure our entrance is that of love.
As you place your gift in the Society of St Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering.
