Catechism QuestionCatechism QuestionCatechism Question 69. How do the soul and body form a
unity in the human being?
The human person is a being at once corporeal
and spiritual. In man spirit and matter form one
nature. This unity is so profound that, thanks to
the spiritual principle which is the soul, the body
which material, becomes a living human body and
participates in the dignity of the image of God.

Fasting & Abstinence Regulations for Lent
Ash Wednesday, February 13th and Good Friday,
March 29th are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of
Lent are also days of abstinence.
Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through
age 59. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two
other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be tak-
en according to each one’s needs, but together they
should not equal another full meal. Eating between
meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and
juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older.
On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that
when health or ability to work would be seriously af-
fected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concern-
ing fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be con-
sulted.
Fasting, Almsgiving and Prayer are the three disci-
plines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should un-
dertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance
and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism
at Easter.

“Preparing for Lent”
Lent should be a time of conversion rather than a time to give up something enjoyable.
Our goal should be to emerge from 40 days of fasting and abstinence closer to Christ.
There is and isn’t a simple answer to what we should do for Lent. The simple answer is
“give up something that will bring you closer to Christ.” If that’s chocolate, awesome!
If it’s some kind of habitual sin, give it up for good and allow Lent to be your starting
point. The un-simple answer is “what brings us closer to Christ, is often different for
each individual.” For some it might be adding something to their day like 5 minutes of
prayer or a ritual of thanking God for their blessings. Be prepared for Lent and start
by asking yourself and God, “What can I commit to over 40 days that will bring me
closer to Jesus?” Take time this week and pray with that question.
