Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?
Now taking reservations through
January 19. Several par ishioners will be hosting dinner in their homes on Sunday, January 28, at 5:00. Your host will pro-vide the main dish and drinks and the guests will bring a salad or vegetable to complete the meal. The “guessing” part is that no one (including the hosts) will know who is in their dinner party until arriving at the
address they will be provided! Child care and a meal will be provided at the school for those in need. Following dinner, everyone will meet at the Church Hall by 7:00 for dessert, to reunite with your children, and to meet everyone else who has participated. Last year was a lot of fun! Please contact Sharron Konzen at 319-350-9861 or rkonzen@yahoo.com. Be sure to advise if you need child care, and provide any food al-lergy information for yourselves and/or your children.

5The Epiphany—We reflected during Advent about the idea of the already, not yet
dimension of our faith. Christ has already come into the world, died, rose from the
dead, conquered sin and evil. There is also a not yet. His work on the cross has
been completed, but all has not yet been realized as we await his triumphal return,
the Second Coming, at the end of time and the resurrection of the dead. We long
for total peace when tears, war and death will be no more. We live and struggle
with evil and sin and await the day when the world will be fully recreated in Jesus’
image, thus bringing his work of salvation to its ultimate fulfillment.
So we wait for what the Epiphany proclaims today. Already we know and it is real that Christ came for all
people. He died for Jews and Gentiles alike. Jesus is the Savior of us all. The Wise Men, the pagan kings,
followed the Star of Bethlehem to find the new born king to whom the prophets and the created order
testified. Not yet is the day when every knee bends and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Patience, people, this day will come in God’s time and way.
We refer to the progress of each year as a year of grace marked from the time of our Lord’s birth, when the Light
entered the world to shine in its darkness. On the Epiphany, let the Magi represent for us the journey of faith on
which we embarked through baptism. The star is Christ the Light who ever leads and guides us not only
through his intercession in heaven, but because he is incarnate, and with us in this time and place. The gifts of
gold, frankincense and myrrh the Wise Men offered the Christ-child are the ones he first gave us. Gold is the
industry of our talents and gifts to be offered in service of him; frankincense is our fragrant offering of the gift of
self in worship of the one, true God, and; myrrh is our anointing by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation
which sets us apart as sons and daughters of God who have received the rush of the Spirit at Pentecost for our
own faith and the edification of the community of believers. We use, give and act upon these gifts in homage of
Christ the King to become holy as he is holy, to call the world to Christ the only Savior and to work with Christ
to make the world holy through the power of his grace. We live in a time that is already, but not yet. Christ has
already come, but his work continues as we await his fullness at the end of time.
From St. Joseph Parishioner and Seminarian Tyler Raymond-- It has been great to be back home at St Joe's for
Christmas these past couple of weeks. Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and prayers! This semester
at Mundelein I will be going with my 3rd year class to the Holy Land for around 9 weeks. We will take classes
and visit many sites from the Bible, as part of formation for the upcoming ordination to the transitional
deaconate for my class and myself. Five men from our Archdiocese are going on the pilgrimage and are all
looking forward (God willing!) to our ordination this coming May! Please keep us all in your prayers as we
continue immediate preparation for ordination! I look forward to the near future when I will be able to celebrate
the liturgy at St Joe's as a transitional deacon! May God bless you and our parish this year! (See you at Easter!)
Days for Life January 18-26, 2018-- 9 Days for Life is a "digital pilgrimage" of prayer and action focused on
cherishing the gift of every person's life. A multi-faceted novena highlighting a different intention each day
provides reflections, bonus information, and suggested actions. Join to receive the novena through the 9 Days
for Life app, daily emails, or daily texts.
See below for information on how else you can get involved!
#9DaysforLife #OurPrayersMa!er.
9 Days for Life Novena--While the overarching intention of the novena is the end to abortion, it also addresses
topics spanning across the range of life issues. Each day's one-page prayer guide focuses on a different intention
and is comprised of five short sections: (1) Intercession; (2) Prayers; (3) Reflection; (4) Acts of Reparation, and;
(5) One Step Further.
Please consult the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website to enroll and participate :
