54-Day Totus Tuus Rosary Novena
Dear Family of God,
Peace and Joy in Our Lord Jesus Christ!
This Gospel reminds us that we are called to proclaim the love of God whether it is convenient or not. Our duty
includes a call to personal holiness and salvation as well as a willingness to speak the love of God to those who do
not know God. A few weeks ago, I spoke about the how we are obliged to protect the fundamental rights of the
citizens and their freedom to live out the Faith in the way that they – and not the government – see fit.
We have the incredible opportunity and freedom (for now) to engage in the battle and to make our voices heard here on earth and in heaven. As part
of our preparation for our important work in the public square and as we prepare to participate in one of the most important elections in our lifetime, I
want to encourage you to pray the 54-Day Totus Tuus Rosary Novena which begins on August 30th, the Memorial of St. Jeanne Jugan, Foundress of
the Little Sisters of the Poor—through October 22nd, the Feast of St. John Paul II.
The origin and importance of inviting Our Blessed Mother to intercede for us is very much a part of the Catholic way of life. Our Lady’s powerful
and loving presence is needed perhaps more now than ever in the history of our nation. Let us pray as though lives depend on us because lives DO
depend on us. You and I are called to defend our religious liberty and speak out for those who have no voice – our unborn brothers and sisters.
Prayer works!
I share this story of the power of 54-Day Totus Tuus Rosary Novena. The daughter of Commander Fortuan Agrelli had endured much physical
suffering. She and her relatives began a novena of Rosaries. The Queen of the Holy Rosary, upon hearing these prayers appeared to the young girl.
Mary, sitting upon a high throne, surrounded by luminous figures, held the divine Child on her lap, and in her hand a Rosary. The Virgin Mother and
the Holy Infant wore gold embroidered garments. They were accompanied by Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. The throne was decorated
with flowers and the beauty of Our Lady was transcendent.
Mary looked upon the sufferer with caring tenderness and the patient saluted her with the words: “Queen of the Holy Rosary, be gracious to me;
restore me to health! I have already prayed to thee in a novena O Mary, but have not yet experienced thy aid. I am so anxious to be cured!”
“Child”, responded the Blessed Virgin, “thou hast invoked me by various titles and hast always obtained favors from me. Now, since thou hast called
me by that title so pleasing to me, ‘Queen of the Holy Rosary’, I can no longer refuse the favor thou dost petition; for this name is most precious and
dear to me. Make three novenas, and thou shalt obtain all.”
Once more the Queen of the Holy Rosary appeared to her and said: “Whoever desires to obtain favors from me should make three novenas of the
prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving.”
This miracle of the Rosary made a very deep impression on Pope Leo XIII, and greatly contributed to the fact that in so many letters, he urged all
Christians to love the Rosary and say it fervently.
The 54-Day Rosary Novena consists of five decades of the Rosary each day for 27 days in petition; then immediately five decades each day for 27
days in thanksgiving.
The meditations vary from day to day. On the first day meditate on the Joyful Mysteries; on the second day the Sorrowful Mysteries; on the third day
the Glorious Mysteries and on the fourth day the Luminous Mysteries; and so on throughout the 54 days.
This is an arduous novena, but it is a novena of love. No prayer ever went unheard and Our Blessed Lady has never been known to fail.
Look upon each Hail Mary as a rare and beautiful rose which you lay at Mary’s feet. These spiritual roses, bound in a wreath with Spiritual
Communions, will be a most pleasing and acceptable gift to Her and will bring down upon you and our nation special graces.
God Bless,
Father Don Kline, V.F.

PASTOR’S NOTES #2
Bells
Dear Family of God,
Peace and Joy in Our Lord Jesus Christ!
It is amazing how much we depend on schedules and routines. Many people rely on their watch or phone
to keep on track and to get to where they need to be on time. While I was in the seminary, I didn’t need a
watch because we had bells. The use of bells let us know when it was time to eat, to sleep, to go to class
and when to pray. I will admit, I didn’t much care for the bells at first. Eventually, I came to appreciate them.
The bells rang out at 5:15am every morning to wake up the community for prayer. Then throughout the day, the bells would chime
every 15 minutes. The bells were also used to proclaim various feast days and celebrations like Christmas and Easter. They would
ring the “death bell” to solicit prayers for the soul of the deceased person. The parish would peal the bells for weddings constituting
an element of joy and solemnity. Ringing the bells kept us grounded and aware of the rhythm of life in the Church. Ringing bells is
still a common practice today in many parishes throughout the world.
You may have noticed the large bell tower attached to our beautiful church building. You may have also noticed the silence
emanating from the tower. You may have asked if bells will go in the bell tower. Your wait is finally over. Due to the generosity of
our parishioners and the success of the Together Let Us Go Forth Campaign, we are ready to let the bells ring with the melodic
sounds that will enhance our already beautiful parish grounds.
What is the significance of the bells? I believe this line in Latin captures the function of the bells best: Lando Deum verum plebem
voco congrego clerum Defunctos ploro, nimbum fugo, festa decoro. (I praise the true God, I call the people, I assemble the clergy; I
bewail the dead, I disperse storm clouds, I do honor to feasts).
Another very common use of the bells has to do with the daily recitation of the Angelus or Ave Maria. In the Middle
Ages the Angelus seems commonly to have been rung with three equal peals, and this practice is still very common. If you are ever in
Rome, you will hear the Ave Maria bells rung with three strokes and a pause, four strokes and a pause, five strokes and a pause, a
final stroke. Now you will hear a similar practice right here in Scottsdale, Arizona!
If you attend our church for Holy Mass, you will hear the hand bells during the Elevation of the Host. This practice of ringing the
bells can be found at the beginning of the thirteenth century where it was the custom to ring one of the great bells of the church at the
moment when the Sacred Host was raised up by the priest. This was to give an opportunity to the people at work in the fields to
momentarily kneel down and make an act of adoration. What a beautiful way to keep Our Lord fixed in our hearts.
Lastly, if you haven’t yet signed up for online giving for our parish. Please do so here: https://saintbernadette.weshareonline.org
Your gifts are needed now more than ever so we can continue the mission of the Church of making more disciples. Thank you for all
who have helped to keep our parish focus on Christ, Our Eucharistic King!
God Bless,
Father Don Kline, V.F.

SVdP Fifth Sunday Collection
This Weekend!
Because of the pandemic, we will not be able to take up this quarter’s Fifth Sunday collection. Please consider donating online on the donate/WeShare portion of the parish web page. These extraordinary times are creating extraordinary needs among families in our area. Help us help them by contributing online so that we have the gifts to share with those who are suffering financially. Know that we will use your donations to provide funds for rent & utilities and for food gift cards. The generosity and support from our parishioners at our Fifth Sunday collections is a testament to the deeply spiritual parish that is St. Bernadette. We appreciate your support and thank you for helping us be the face of Christ to others.

THIS SATURDAY & SUNDAY BEFORE AND AFTER ALL MASSES
Phoenix has been experiencing extreme heat conditions this summer and water is critical to our homeless populations. Help us by donating a case of bottled water to make sure our most vulnerable neighbors have the water they need. DROP CASES OF WATER OFF IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL GYM.
PLEASE DO NOT BRING WATER TO THE CHURCH BUILDING
The gym is located just south of the Parish office and backs up to 60th Street.
Cases should be 24 count or larger.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! YOU CAN HELP SAVE A LIFE.
