The Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach was created by Emma Hartnell-Baker (Miss Emma), also known as the Reading Whisperer. Emma has a BEd Hons (Early Years) and a Masters Degree in Special Educational Needs. She is completing a doctorate, researching early literacy interventions, at Griffith University. Before emigrating to Australia Emma was a UK Government Inspector of EY Education (for the Office for Standards in Education).Although the focus has been on creating a free framework for parents and educatorsworking with children aged 3 - 8, as a preventative approach, SpeedySSP resources and lesson guides are also being developed for older students, including those with learning challenges such as Dyslexia. There will also shortly be a complete program of ‘virtual lessons’ for students being home schooled, or suspended/ permanently excluded.SSP is based on education and neuroscience research, in addition to over twenty yearsof practical experience working with children of all ages and abilities, includingthose who are reluctant to even attempt to learn to read and spell due to previousnegative experiences. SSP is used by educators interested in taking a ‘whole child’ approach; not only teaching EVERY child to read and spell, in the way that worksfor that child (ie personalised learning) but also to LOVE reading and writing.SSP wires brains for reading and spelling, to prevent difficulties, and also modifies brainnetworks, to enable older students to finally crack the literacy code.

Using SSP children can be reading and spelling fluently, and with confidence, very quickly and easily. This is because there is an understanding of the crucialrole of phonemic awareness and phonics. There is a wide range of free resources and tools available to introduce and reinforce these skills in a systematic waythat makes sense to students, as they start from speech rather than print.(Most phonics programs start from print) Phonemic awareness is the BIGGEST predictor of reading and spelling success(or failure) ANY child can have poor phonemic awareness, and need specificactivities in order to overcome this. SSP enables children with poor phonemicawareness to be identified early, and to overcome this challenge; a challengethat would otherwise guaranteee reading difficulties. PA is central to the SSP Approach !

When using SSP children are exposedto ALL of the spelling variations...
