Always start with SPEECH

This enables everyone (teachers and students) to work smarter, not harder.

Spelling starts from speech, not print. We created the written word to record our spoken words, not the other way around.

Words are spelt using sound pics™ – representations of the smaller parts of our words – so children MUST be taught them all. All can be seen within the Speech Sound Clouds

Give this to parents

Teachers/ Parents - ‘helpful words’ list

How any words are added to their folders after the first 11 depends on the child. As you progress, point out when the child can now decode the words (asthe child learns more sound pics)These are high frequency words, not‘sight words’ – and most can be decodedwhen the child has covered those soundpics.

At all times, from term 1 of Prep, try to see sound pics in words, and encourage children to do the same. This will really help you shape their reading and spelling brains.

Use every opportunity to do this ! Questions? Emma@ReadAustralia.com

To develop exceptional spelling (encoding) skills we need tostart from SPEECH. If children cannot hear the smaller parts in words, they will not be able to develop these skills.

Children learn these speech sound picsexplicitly first, and how to decode and encode words using their sound pics

Alongside this explicit teaching children also investigate the code, and use the Speech Sound Clouds

Why SSP wires brains for spelling

Green level sound pics and a few sound pic words

When you see the picture, say what it is, listen for the speech sounds, to work out which is first, middle, end etc.

You may be ready to draw the lines, and choose sound pics that match these speech sounds, in the right order. Until

then just listen, and then look at the word on the next slide.

If your teacher thinks you are ready, she/ he may give you magnetic letters, cards, or a whiteboard pen.

Remember to say the phrase when you write the letters!(see separate letter formation folder for phrases)

Use your whiteboard so that you can sit in front of the screen, on the carpet. If you find it difficult remembering

how to write the sound pics your teacher will put this strip at the top of your whiteboard, to remind you.

the tap drips, and the rabbit taps his paw

tan_ __ __1 2 3

snap_____ _____ ______ _______ 1 2 3 4

Point to the sound pics in order, and the children say the word. Children can also take turns doing this (eg make cards, they choose one, and then sound it on the board for the rest of the class)

Children then write the word on their boards.

Speedy Green EncodingTeacher choose a word, and the children spell it on their boards.

Now let’s fully investigate the Speech Sound Clouds

We can make sure we investigate ALL of the speech sound pics in the English language. Many have already been covered in the levels, and through your sound pic detective work. These clouds represent EVERY speech sound in the English language, and show EVERY way we represent it (ie all spelling variations in the whole of the English language!!)

Teachers- children cover the levels in Prep and be ready for the clouds. By the end of Year 1children can have covered all levels, and all spelling variations, if you take a systematic approach.

Use the clouds for your detective work now, and to work out ALL of the sound pics for all of the speech sounds you haven’texplored in the levels.

Teachers - if you have been using Speech Sound Cloud Albums you will know from their albums what each child has really looked at. If a child has only really ‘discovered’ ff and f, for example, you know which to now look at more formally. Really use these albums as they not only help the child, but help you see what they have had experience with.

Ideas !

See if you can create a poem, story, song etc that includes every sound pic for that speech sound….. like this one !

Ideas !
