Locals suit up forAussies at indoorlacrosse worlds
■ By Herb GarbuttOAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF
Harry Hristopoulos was intrigued when he was first askedabout playing for Australia at the World Indoor LacrosseChampionships.
His father was born in Adelaide, making him eligible toplay for the Aussies. But there was one major obstacle —how would he get there for tryouts?
“At first, I couldn’t believe it. Then I thought, ‘We’ll see ifit happens,’” the 18-year-old rookie with the Oakville Buzzsaid.
As it turned out, there would be no tryouts andHristopoulos and his cousin Harrison joined the team afterit arrived in Canada for a series of exhibition games leadingup to the worlds.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Harrison, whose father moved to Canada at the age of 13. “We mightget a chance to play again in four years, but you never know.We couldn’t pass it up.”
Oakville’s Dylan MacDougall was also slated to play forthe Australian squad but broke his hand while playing forthe Burlington junior A Chiefs. MacDougall’s father, Rob, isan assistant coach with the Australian team at the worlds, which began Monday in Halifax.
Other locals participating include former Buzz playerJustin Wilson-Kirby (Scotland) and National Lacrosse
