Its Significance To The War

• The Battle of Stalingrad was the true turning point of the war in Europe.

• It basically ended any realistic plans Hitler had of dominating Europe.

The Basics About The Battles

Where: The battles happened in Stalingrad and Leningrad Russia.

When: The attacks on Stalingrad and Leningrad were in June 1941. Then ended with a huge loss to the Germans in January 1943.

The Basics About The Battles Part 2

Who: Russia vs. Germany. Germany lost by a lot.

What: Germany wanted to expand its power though out Europe. They thought that invading Russia would be easy. But they were wrong and lost.

How The Germans Lost

• The lost because the Russian hit the Germans with a huge counter attack. Yet Hitler still wouldn’t admit defeat and retreat. With control of Russia Hitler's power would be at its highest.

Surrender At Stalingrad

• The long Battle of Stalingrad ended in January 1943 with the surrender of German troops like these. Of the 91,000 prisoners taken by the Soviets, only about 5,000 eventually survived and returned to Germany.
