Sole: Earth Sea and Sky

“the stronger the colour in the painting is, the more there is enthusiasm for life” Vincent Van Gogh - The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh.

GX Gallery presents specially selected paintings by Michael Sole. Born in Dorset in 1985, educated at Wimbledon College of Art graduating with a BA in 2008, Sole has gone on to exhibit in group and solo shows across Britain and France, twice awarded ‘Young Artist of the Year’ by the Roy-al Society. Now a recognised name within contemporary British art his works continue to appreciate, with a loyal following of collectors. This is the third exhibition of his works in London. Sole’s dedication to research, constant commitment to overload and push the boundaries of paint, and his confidence are evident in this collection of land and seascapes.

Michael says he paints for paintings sake. Inspired by Van Gogh and Gau-guin, Sole is a great believer in immersion in both subject and process, much evident in his finished works. Michael’s new paintings focus on the creation of intrigue through vast, limitless spacious skies and forests with bold colours, thick paint, simple outlines and fluid brush stroke. He is best known for his large, brave, striking and emotionally charged canvases of rolling, almost splashing, sea paintings.

‘I’m not trying to replicate a place or an image, I’m trying to create a paint-ing. Remembering this is important. I have to paint the seascapes for my own sake. I come to realise that I have to. The end result suddenly hap-pens then I tweak just here and there. With these tree paintings the em-phasis is on this ‘tweaking’ rather than the sudden magic....Michael Sole
