Techniques for Creating Ecological Site Extent Maps

Steve Campbell Soil Scientist USDA – Natural Resources Conservation Service West National Technology Support Center Portland, Oregon

Background The National Geospatial Management

Center in Fort Worth periodically provides a snapshot of the Soil Data Mart spatial and tabular data in file geodatabase format to the Regional Soil Survey Offices (MO’s)

These file geodatabases can be used to create ecological site extent maps.

Soil Data Mart (SDM) File Geodatabase in ArcCatalog

Ecological site data is stored in the coecoclass table .

Soil survey polygons are in the MUPOLYGON feature class

Soil survey area boundary polygons are in the SAPOLYGON feature class

SSURGO Tabular Data Relationships

The mapunit table can be joined or related the spatial data.

Relationship Classes have already been created in the SDM File Geodatabase

Using the SDM File Geodatabase, we’ll create an ecological site extent map for: R028AY220UT Semidesert loam (Wyoming big sagebrush)

MO-1 NASIS Report: UTIL - Ecological Site Extent by Soil Survey Area NAT

In ArcMap, the SAPOLYGON and MUPOLYGON layers and the coecoclass table have been added to the table of contents.

Right click on the coecoclass table and select Open.

We’ll query the Ecological Classification ID field for R028AY220UT.

Click the Options button then Select by Attributes.

2. Click the “=“ symbol

1. Left double click the Ecological Classification ID

3. Type the Ecological Classification ID with single quotes on both ends.

4. Click the Apply button.

Click the Selected button. Note that 163 records have been selected. This indicates that 163 soil mapunit components are linked to this ecological site.

Click on Options > Related Tables > Component_Coecoclass: < Component Table

The Component table opens and is added to the Table of Contents

Click on Options > Related Tables > xMapunit_Component: < Mapunit Table

The Mapunit table opens and is added to the Table of Contents

Note that 153 mapunit records have been selected.

Click on Options > Related Tables > xMapunit_Mupolygon:> Mapunit Polygon Layer

The MUPOLYGON attribute table opens. Click the Selected button. Note that 1977 polygon records have been selected.

Right click on MUPOLYGON. Choose Selection > Zoom to Selected Features.

Check the boxes for SAPOLYGON and MUPOLYGON to display them. The polygons that contain ecological site R028AY220UT are selected in blue outline.

To create a permanent layer for the selected polygons, right click MUPOLYGON and select Data > Export Data.

Keep the default to Export Selected Features.

Option to use the coordinate system of the layer or data frame.

Use Browse button to select location. Can export as a geodatabase feature class of shapefile.

A new Ecological Site Map Layers tool for ArcGIS 9.3.1 is under development by Steve Peaslee, GIS Specialist at the National Soil Survey Center

Ecological Site Map Layers tool

The tool creates a layer file for each ecological site that occurs in the soil survey polygons file geodatabase feature class.

Layer file for ecological site R034XY003UT - Alkali Fan (Castlevalley Saltbush)

Using the Identify tool, data from related tables can be viewed for polygons.
