Social interaction definedIntroduction
Social interaction is the ability of two or more beings to come into contact, communicate or acknowledge one another, while being aware of the others presence
– Is the building block of society
– involves smiling, talking, or winking; threatening, fighting, or debating; and negotiating, discussing, or litigating
It may include the interaction a family has together (eating, sleeping, living together) or bureaucracies that are formed out of the need to create order within the interaction itself
Dynamic sequence of social actions between individuals or groups, who modify their actions and reactions due to actions by their partner
Actor enters; forms an impression and then acts on the impression
– This marks the beginning of the interaction
Target enters; forms an impression and then responds on the impression
Actor interprets the target's response, revises impression accordingly, and responds
Target interprets the actor’s response, revises impression, and figures out what to do next
– This marks the end of the interaction.
The social interaction cycle…

Technology has impacted social relations…The role of technology in social interaction
Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds; gadgets have become smaller; waiting times to communicate have become shorter because of faster speeds
People communicate continuously audibly and visually, no matter how far apart
– human relations have come closer because of devices and their functions
Internet is replacing books, as people can get most of their materials for study on the Internet
Social networking sites have facilitated getting in touch with long-lost friends/ acquaintances
Advancement in technology has made it convenient at the workplace in video conferencing, video presentations, data transmission and virtual private networking
At the personal front, has facilitated getting in touch with friends and family geographically spread out
While at the same time:
– Has given birth to deficits that interfere with daily actions, interpersonal relationships, conversations, and memory
– People spend more time using information and technology equipment, rather than with their loved ones

There will be convergence in the ICT industry… Convergence is the name of the game
Today’s telecommunications market segment is becoming increasingly global and major players are emerging in this market struggling to take a dominant position
Wire line is gradually becoming obsolete and will soon converge with wireless
– Will lead to a greater boom of smart technologies
– Will be used on a personal level as well as on a professional/ office level
Attractiveness of ‘wearable technology’ to consumers has led to a players competing against each other, and competition is expected to intensify
Convergence of small players with their bigger counterparts
– There will be a large number of M&As and JVs to realize economies of scale and to address newer markets
– Internet, broadcasting and telecommunications service providers are joining hands to collaborate and offer ‘bundled services’ – as an example, Brazil (Telemar acquired WayTV), Sri Lanka (Dialog Telekom offering fixed, mobile, TV and internet) and Nigeria (MTN acquired VGC Communications)
– Mergers would eventually lead to less competition, market dominance and lesser diversity of content
Convergence will lead to reduced costs and better service offerings for the end user

…and in the service offeringsConvergence is the name of the game
The Information and Communications Technology industry is witnessing technological convergence and digital convergence:
– Technological convergence, or the tendency for different technological systems to evolve toward performing similar tasks
– Digital convergence, or separate technologies such as voice (and telephony features), data (and productivity applications), and video that sharing resources and interacting with each other
Convergence services, such as VoIP, IPTV, Mobile TV, Smart TV, etc., are soon replacing old technologies
LTE/4G networks is expected to account for 1 in 5 mobile broadband subscriptions by 2017 (as compared to 1 in 25 in 2012) according to AT Kearney
– Subscriber base will reach 920 million
Examples include:
– Using the Internet for voice telephony
– Video on demand
– Fixed-mobile convergence
A number of private telecom service providers the world over have already started offering IPTV services
Bundled service offerings will lead to lower costs and better quality offerings
– Mobile-to-mobile convergence
– Location-based services
– Integrated products and bundles

To summarizeConclusion
Technology has had a major impact on social interaction and on social relations
There are many positives and some negatives of the way it has affected humans
While it has been able to bring people closer to each other, it has in fact distanced them emotionally
Technology will have a greater impact in the future, with greater number of people getting connected to the mobile phone and to the internet
Smart devices will define the movement with the world gradually moving towards a ‘smart world’
Convergence is imperative and will see the convergence of not only players across horizontals and verticals, but convergence across service offerings as well
