Smartphones and Productivity

A smartphone is a mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a contemporary feature phone.

Definition of a smartphone

• In 2008 Nokia sold 60 920 smartphones • In 2010 the same company is now selling 260 000

smartphones a day showing a definite increase in sales by a wide margin

StatisticsFrom their production onset smartphone sales have been on the increase as the bottom figures will show:

• Estimates say in 2011, half a billion smartphones could be sold.

Smartphones improve on one’s social life by granting access to social networking sites even on the go thereby contributing to improving social engagement. Companies like Motorola and Palm have taken things a step further by designing phones that merge different communications and social networks into a single tool, allowing you to interact with all of them from one spot-a socialite’s delight.

Social Engagement

EducationSmartphones are making an impact on education. Most smartphones have a keyboard layout. This gets one accustomed to a computer and prepares them for the workplace by familiarising one with emails and appointments

College students are now using smartphones to research, find, access and use information for educational purposes.

Communication in the work placeCompanies can now handle business applications using mobile devices of different vendors. Business communications like CRM (Customer Relationship Management) can be used with smartphones. As they are also compact and provide unprecedented access to email one doesn’t have to be on a desktop to exchange emails and business plans.

ProductivityProductivity is on the increase because with a smartphone one can work even out of the office as all the normal computer functions are possible thereby maximising on time whether in or out of the office.

Conclusion As we have noted in the above slides smartphones are

making a positive impact in society and their constant increase cannot be ignored. They may have their disadvantages like everything in this world but what is clear is that overally their advantages out-weigh their disadvantages. I feel that these have not only been a benefit to social life but to economic life aswel.
