• The word Smart has to be the most overused (and soon to be most despised word in technology today)

• Todays presentation is no different I am sorry! You can boo now.

• But why is this relevant?

• The push toward smart cities and digitalstrategies is (should be) for onepurpose:

– To use data to enable smarterdecisions and enhance the lives ofthe people in the region

• Currently overlooked and we see tomany hidden agendas withmanufacturers and consultants (ofcourse not this one!)

• The ability to innovate by using thisinformation is transforming business,government and communities

• This one word is the key driver for edge compute

• Currently, the majority of Internet of Things devices rely on cellular networks.

• The vast amount of data on these networks slows the rate at which it is processed.

• The Data Centre market will change

• Micro DC’s will finally become a thing

• Distributed compute

• Cloud at the edge

What Role does Data play?

• To garner the correct data is one problem The ability to usefully translate this data is another

• Ownership of data

• Access to the data

• Speed at which the data can be sourced, analysed and used

• This is where the foundation layer and Data Centres come in

• Everything is moving to as an aaS model

• Transport, metering, infrastructure

• The major user advantage is “evergreen solutions”

• The major vendor advantage is an ongoing revenue stream and clients that are closely aligned

• Creates better solutions through user input

The Criteria

• Have a policy for the plan

• Smart City Principles

• Don’t do technology forTechnology sake!

• Use technologies thatwill impact the keyregional drivers

Summary

• Shields predicts that the sensor market will be over $5T over the next 5 years

• The need for more connectivity and edge compute has only just begun

• The need for more and more foundation layer infrastructure will continue
