Discipline-specific Collaborative Scholarship in Organic Chemistry

within CCCU schools

Title III Grant 07/08Michael Korn

Heavenly Father....thank you for working in our midst. Bless the body of Christ at CCCU and help us to make you

famous!

Overall GoalOverall Goal

• To make God famous!• To bring dedicated Christians who are

organic chemists together to work corporately for something bigger than themselves.

• To show the ‘world’ that Christians can be very good scholars => reclaim education for Christ.

• To further the kingdom of God.

MeansMeans

• To move away from isolation• To share expertise• To share research equipment• To exchange best teaching practices (lecture

and lab)• To identify common project(s)

ProcedureProcedure

• All CCCU schools were searched via the internet for ‘chemistry’ programs, and then for professors that teach organic chemistry.

• Results: – 110 CCCU schools searched– 87 have chemistry program– 90+ professors teach organic chemistry

ProcedureProcedure

• All 90+ professors were contacted by e-mail and invited to join the collaborative effort.

• Results: – 12 (14) professors responded (very positively!)– Equals about 13% (15%) response rate– 40% female /60% male (cc.f.20/80 of the 93 profs)– representing 11 CCCU schools

Future stepsFuture steps• Design/identify a special course offered/taught at

one university with students enrolling from all other universities.

• Collect original & unique experiments for the organic lab and publish jointly.

• Exchange e-mails when tackling an OC problem. • Find/engage in a joint research project.– E.g. One PI, many co-PIs– Major research task, e.g. malaria (?)– Send students along to do summer research
