Be reborn. Follow your heart instead of
your head. Go barefoot before it’s time.
Forget your umbrella and walk in the
rain like you did as a kid. Buy flowers
instead of bread. Be a lunchbox artist…

or a new idea. Crush on someone
unattainable. Wake up to Coltrane
to sweet talk your soul. Make Green
your mantra. Grow lettuce, boil
shrimp. Give up winter blues and
for a while. Adopt a dog and name
it Scrappy. Consider the lilies of the
valley and wear Diorissimo. Get a
tattoo that says “Kiss the sky.” Buy that

The United Skirts of
America was founded
on the blood, sweat
and estrogen of our
foremothers, who
won us the freedom to
choose...to break The
Rules, to wear combat
boots or high heels, to
run for office or run a
marathon, to form our
own rock groups instead
of being groupies, to
shatter Glass Ceilings
and Glass Slippers, to
shoot hoops instead
of settling for hoop
skirts. The ones who
came before us made
it possible for our
daughters to dream
bigger, to have the
chance to grow up to
be President and turn

We often talk about “work friends” as if they’re in a category apart from our regular
friends. But when I think about it, some of my very best friends are people I’ve met at
work. And why not? Work is a big part of most of our lives. When photographer Molly
Harrell and I were working on this month’s profile of friends Darci Strickland and Andrea
Mock, we met them for lunch. They told us how their relationship had evolved alongside
the TV show they co-anchor, Friends @ Five. They became friends because of work, but
they’re connected because they’re both mothers, they have the same sense of humor, be-
cause as Darci put it, “we’re a microwave society,” and we need more people with staying
power, more things that last. It made me think about my bicycle crash last May, and how
Molly offered to change my bandages when I was too wimpy to do it myself. She showed
up with Hello Kitty bandaids and a giant roll of gauze. That’s friendship, no qualifiers
needed, and I feel lucky to work with such a good friend.

Nikki publisher@skirt.com
Although I have some completely normal friendships, I also have a tendency to form
Lucy and Ethel friendships in which I always play Ethel. In other words, I seem to get
pulled into my friends’ crazy schemes that aren’t that far from the chocolate factory
episode on I Love Lucy. Take, for instance, the time years ago when one of my Lucy
friends decided she’d open a cannery despite having zero experience, and then sucked
me into her crackbrained plot. Her mantra was, “How hard can it be?”, and her
business plan revolved around our wearing matching overalls and hairnets as we
pickled okra. The snag was that she required a certificate from what we called Vinegar
School. Held in upstate New York, it required three days of nonstop lectures each
of which was followed by a written exam. Somehow I was elected to represent the
company and aced the tests, but I bailed on the cannery when I realized I’d actually
have to work in a kitchen, a room I try to avoid whenever I can. I vowed to play it
safe in the future, but recently a new Lucy corralled me into starting a project aimed
at getting women elected to office in South Carolina. Pushover that I am, I agreed to
work in the chocolate factory again. After all, how hard could it be? Make a website,
get a logo, hire an attorney, lobby legislators, raise money, form a Super(woman) Pac.
Before I knew it, the conveyor belt was picking up speed and it was too late to jump
off. And after all, the Lucys in my life in my life dare me to fly without a safety net,
and that’s priceless.

If you sometimes forget to reapply sunscreen when you should,
consider an extra line of defense in the stylish form of a Tula hat. While on vacation in
Mexico 22 years ago, Alice Eichelmann found a handcrafted palm hat that she thought
would be perfect for gardening. She tracked down its origin to a town where the villagers
have been weaving hats out of palm leaves for more than 400 years.
She began collaborating with them, and now they weave, sew and shape her stylish
designs. Tula hats are constructed to be breathable in hot weather, and their sun
protection is rated UPF 50+. Bonus...they’re also affordable!

I sripped off my clothing, exposing my bare skin to the bitter night, and climbed on top of Rosita, stomach-to-stomach, skin-on-skin. Nicole wrapped her tiny, naked self around the two of us. Using our t-shirts and yoga pants for cover, we lay there in a cuddled heap of flesh, allowing regret for our unintentional camping trip to spread over us like the weight of a heavy blanket.
It was a warm September day when we arrived at the Mathieu Lakes trailhead just west of Sisters, Oregon. We wouldn’t need our coats, we decided, because we were planning to return before dark. We wouldn’t need our cell phones because we didn’t even get service in the parking lot. And bringing food was unnecessary because Rosita’s parents had just served us brunch as we discussed how a short hike was the perfect cure for our reunion-induced hangovers. Prepared with water and friendship, we started into the pine-covered forest.
Eventually, we came to a sign stating we were walking the Pacific Crest Trail (an advanced hiker’s dream of 2,650 miles leading from Canada to Mexico) and wondered if we had missed our turn. We didn’t know how far we had come, but we knew we weren’t aiming to conquer the PCT. We kept moving, looking for any indication we were on the right path, when the trail forked ahead.
“Who has the map?” Nicole checked her pockets.“You mean the one we left on the kitchen table?” I tried to remember the
trail map Rosita’s father lent us—the one we’d mostly ignored.Rosita’s face was grave. “Definitely take the right.” A few more miles curved us through mounds of lava and twisted, white-
bark pines before leading to the edge of a cliff. Looking over, the wilderness appeared to reach the Pacific Ocean.
Rosita let out a sigh. “Maybe it was left?” Darkness and panic arrived together. “I think we should sleep here, in the middle of the trail,” said Rosita. “Then
we know we can backtrack tomorrow.” Nicole and I shuddered. “If we continue now and lose the trail, we risk being lost all day tomorrow too.”
We nodded in agreement and refrained from mentioning our true fears. What if we see a cougar? Are we already too lost to find our way out? Will we freeze to death?
As we settled in for the night, we fantasized about a dinner we weren’t go-ing to taste: We combined piping-hot enchiladas with homemade guacamole; we sautéed shrimp in a variety of spices; and we sipped on expensive cabernet. For dessert, we gorged ourselves on tropical fruits, dipping each savory bite in a decadent chocolate fondue.
As we lay back to watch the stars twinkle against a clear sky, our stom-achs gurgled. I rested my head on Rosita’s bare chest and warmed my hands under her back. “Thank God I love you,” she joked. We had removed what little clothes we had on because of a common belief in the lore that sharing our
direct body heat would keep us warmer, while allowing our clothing to act as a shield from the cold. Later, we would learn how wrong we were.
When silence fell upon us, I imagined one of the stars to be a spotlight shining down from a rescue helicopter. Or maybe it would be a flashlight held by a handsome knight on a horse. I fought the urge to cry, realizing that even if Rosita’s parents (the only people who knew where we were) had come looking for us, we were so far off our original trail they wouldn’t have known where to start. I rolled over, warming my back against Nicole’s, and lost the battle with my tears.
If the girls heard my sobs, they said nothing. I thought about the hiker who two years earlier had lost her life on this very trail. “Exposure to the elements,” the article read. I thought about the phone call from my mom that very morn-ing. She warned me about the unusual number of cougar sightings near the Deschutes River Trail I frequently run. Instead of shying away from the menace like I told her I would, I was practically sleeping in his bed.
The minutes sluggishly turned into hours, and the stillness that exagger-ated my fears finally turned to the welcome sound of chirping birds. As the sun gradually warmed the day and thawed our stiff limbs, it shone on a miracle up ahead. We stopped, not trusting our sleepy eyes, as three horsemen rode toward us, shouting Rosita’s name.
“That’s me!” she declared. The Deschutes County Search and Rescue had found us. We mounted their horses and allowed them to guide us out of the wilderness.
“It was 25 degrees up there last night. How did you stay warm?” We shot each other knowing smiles. “We cuddled.” Almost as if he read our minds, he later told us how sleeping naked is only a
survival tactic if one person is suffering from hypothermia. It doesn’t work as a prevention method, like we originally thought, though none of us can remember for certain where we heard it did.
Back in Rosita’s car, we decided to focus on the positive. We passed around praise for our ability to remain calm in such a stressful situation. We knew we had made a silly mistake (or ten) that could easily have been prevented with a flashlight and a map, but it also could have been far worse had we turned our fear into arguments, our anger into foolish thinking.
Rosita pulled the car onto the highway toward hot meals and cozy beds and passed a building that read “Sisters Tattoo.” We may have overlooked the small wooden post that told us where to turn in the forest, but we weren’t going to miss this sign.
That night we all slept in Rosita’s bed, and when I awoke in a tangled embrace, I questioned whether it had all been just a dream. Then I looked down to see the Three Sisters Mountains engraved on my healing skin and knew it marked a powerful lesson on sisterhood and survival that would find me if I ever felt lost again.
