SPECIALTY POLYMER COATINGS, INC.
Single Coat 100% Solids Tank Linings
Tank Linings with 100% Solids
Excellent abrasionQuicker turn around (3-5 times)No VOC limitations / restrictionsNo solvent entrapmentNo inter-coat adhesion issuesHigher DFT achievable
Typical uses for 100% Solids linings in storage vessels
Lining of floor and wallsHydro Carbon tanks usually lined 1 –1.5m
(3.5-5.5 feet) up wallChemical service tanks/vessels often entire
internal surfaceSecondary containment
100%Solids Linings
Petro-Chemical Sewage / Wastewater H2SPotable WaterAcids / Alkyds Pulp & Paper
Surface Preparation
Surface Preparation is Key!!NACE #2 / SSPC SP10 Near White Metal –
typical minimumNACE #1 / SSPC SP5 White Metal Best
(difficult on existing metal)2.5mil-5mil anchor profile recommend
SSPC SP10 Near White Metal Grit Blast
Sharp welds ground smooth prior to blasting
100% Solids Excellent at covering welds and seams jeep free
Sharp angles difficult to coat / Stripe coating recommended
Stripe coating of welds
Advantages
Better Chemical resistanceHigher abrasion valuesHigher adhesion to grit-blasted steelHigher immersion temperaturesLess expense / single coat applicationThicker films possible (longer life)Quick curing / faster turn-around
Disadvantages
Plural Component equipment can be complicated, Experienced applicators a must!
Re-Coat times are shorter than solvinatedOff ratio application = expensive coating
removal
Variable ratio plural component equipment
Fixed Ratio Plural Component Equipment
100% Solids linings for concrete
Again Surface Preparation is Key!!! Grit blasting recommended to remove any loose
concrete, providing a clean new substrate to increase adhesion
Bug holes need to be filled (often twice) A moisture tolerant epoxy primer best for concrete Green concrete needs to be cured for 26 days for
best results
Freshly blasted concrete
Filling of bug holes
Bug holes after primer
Often more bug holes are present after the primer has been applied
A second application is often required for best results
Final application of 100% Solids NSF Epoxy
Special Considerations
De-Humidification may be required to hold the grit blast on steel substrates
Cold climates may require insulation on the tank exterior to prevent condensation
Heating often required to cure out coatings in cold weather
Ensuring Longevity / Quality
Choose and experienced qualified contractor Research the lining/coating choice for the
environment & contents Have a NACE/SSPC qualified coating inspector
present the entire job! Ensure your contractor has experience with the
lining/coating for your job * If one bid is greatly lower than the rest there is a
reason why!
