WHY USE STORYTELLING IN THE INTERCULTURAL LEARNING

BECAUSE:

n Storytelling is about building a relationship that enables learning. (...) Stories enable us to engage with new knowledge, broader perspectives, and expanded possibilities because we encounter them in the familiar territory of human experience. Marsha, Rossiter, Narrative and Stories in Adult Teaching and Learning, 2002

n Stories are believable, rememberable and entertaining. Neuhauser,P.C. Corporate Legends and Lore: The Power of Storytelling as a Management Tool. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1993.

n Stories of achievement and transformation can function as motivators, pathfinders, and sources of encouragement. Clark, M. C. Off the Beaten Path: Some Creative Approaches to Adult Learning.i New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education no. 89 (Spring 2001): 83-91.

Why should we be conscious of the choice of visual stories?

n  We interpret things significantly faster with vision than with other senses.

n  We interpret the stories through our own cultural background and visual stories might be misunderstood.

n  We should highlight the zooming in & out effects to underline that what we show is just a piece of the much more complex whole.

n  We tend to simplify things and that can lead to stereotyping.

POWERFUL VISUAL STORIES

n  are simple – in order to avoid the black and white scenarios we need to encourage each other to tell the STORIES.

n  invite to discussions – and that is why we need to describe and interprete rather than judge – we need the STORIES.

n  are easily remembered – provided they tell the story that is appealing to the listeners.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving it.
