June & July 2020 Sivan-Av 5780
Rabbi Barton silently lit two yahrzeit candles with two minutes of silence. One was for those who lost their lives to COVID-19 (353 deaths in May in Iowa alone) and one was for those people of color who lost their lives to systemic racism. This was in conjuction with Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) and in solidarity with many other area congregations of different denominations. Everyone marked these losses in their own tradition and publicized them using the hashtag #grievingtogetherIA The video was on Rabbi Barton's Facebook page as a Facebook Live video
and is on Tifereth's Facebook page. From Rabbi Barton: I have no sufficient words to offer right now in the midst of all this pain, grief and heartache, other than that may the two small lights I lit on Monday be a reminder that we each are small lights who have the potential to greatly change the whole world, for better or for worse. May we each work towards being a light for the better. Rabbi Barton
Congregants, Thank you to everyone who attended our virtual annual meet-ing last month, and for your continued support of Tifereth the past few months. Despite our physical structure being closed, the Tifereth community is very much alive and well! In addition to the Tuesday morning and Friday night zoom services, please see the rest of the bulletin for updates on virtual clas-ses, our garden, and other ways you can engage. I am honored and excited to serve as the President of the Tifereth Board of Directors. My love for this community is deeply rooted here as a 5th generation Des Moines Jew. My great great grandfather and his family lived in a house on the corner of 2nd Ave and University Ave (near where Mercy Hos-pital currently sits). I’ve heard stories of them going down to the Court Ave train station to pick up arriving Jews in Des Moines and give them shelter as they worked to build a new life here. Many of you knew my grandmother, Elizabeth Sher-man, and mother, Maddie, who devoted much of their free time to the growth and sustainably of Tifereth and the greater Des Moines Jewish and secular communities. I hope I can continue their legacy of service and work with you to grow our organization. A little more about me: I run a marketing and consulting firm, Emerge Growth Strategies, which operates as an outsourced CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) business in a variety of indus-tries. Additionally, I am co-owner of the Mars coffee shops and serve on the boards of Central Iowa Shelter & Services and the Des Moines Music Coalition. My wife, Chelsea, and I re-cently purchased a house near the synagogue, where we live with our 3 year old dog, Daphne. Chelsea is a high school Spanish teacher at Johnston High School. I hope all three of us see you soon in person. Finally, I want to mention the Mikvah addition project that was presented at the annual meeting. This is a very exciting addi-tion for our entire community, and I want to again thank Lou and Marilyn Hurwitz for their contribution. Please look for addi-tional information from me in the coming weeks on how you can also help support this project. Stay Safe, Justin
A Special Message from Both,

The Online 2019-2020 Annual Meeting was a Success!
This year due to covid-19 the 2019-2020 Tifereth Annual Meeting was held online. It took a lot of planning and preparation by a team of people to make it the success it was! The end result paid off. Members were able to go directly to the Tifereth website to preview all the reports, minutes, finances and be able to submit question before the meeting. They were able to email in questions during the meeting as well. This allowed Jacob Lederman to present all necessary information at the meeting without being stopped to answer question. There were a few questions asked at the end of the meeting through Zoom online but the meeting still went smoothly and lasted under an hour! The efficiency of this meeting, may have future Annual Meeting online as well.

Film Description: After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political maneuverings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian's life.
Tisha B’Av July 29-30th. More info about Tisha B’Av event will be announced soon.
The ninth day of the month of Av (which month coincides with July and/or August), is the major day of communal mourning in the Jewish calendar. Although a large number of disasters are said to have befallen the Jews on this day, the major commemoration is of the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. and 70 C.E., respectively. Tisha B’Av is therefore observed as a day of communal mourning, which is expressed through fasting and the abstention from pleasurable activities and extraneous diversions.
