João Castro-Gomes is full Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture ofUniversityofBeiraInterior(UBI).

HeconcludedhisDoctorofPhilosophyDegree(PhD)onMathematicalmodelsforassessingcementhydration and microstructure of cement pastes, on 1997 at University of Leeds (UK) and joinedafterwardstheDepartmentofCivilEngineeringatUBI.Sincethenhewasparticularlyinvolvedintheinstallation of different research laboratories for materials and construction technology at UBI,namelythelaboratoryofdurabilityofmaterials.Hewasalsoresponsiblefortheimplementationofthe first Master Course and the first Erasmus program and the establishment of first DoctoralProgramofstudiesinCivilEngineeringatUBI.

Duringhisscientificactivity,hasbeeninvolvedandcoordinatedseveralresearchprojectsgrantedbyhighlycompetitiveNationalandEuropeanResearchCalls,someoftheminvolvingSMEsandindustry(e.g. GEOGREEN –Waste geopolymeric binder-based natural vegetated panels for energy-efficientbuilding green roofs and facades. Period: 2011-2013. FCT grant. UBI funding: EUR 152.832,00;SELICON-Servicelifedesign:modellingthedurabilityperformanceofConcrete.Period:2008-2011.FCT grant. UBI funding: EUR 31.900,00; VALREMIN – Valorisation of mining wastes. Period 2006-2008. ADI grant. Castro-Gomes current research interests are: Environmentally sustainable binders and composites(low-CO2binders,alkaliactivated/geopolymericcements,CO2activatedcements,reuseofindustrialand household wastes particularly mining waste, polymer composites incorporating wastes);Technologiesforsustainableconstruction(minimizationofrawmaterials,energy-efficiencybuildings,recycling of building materials, vegetated surfaces modular systems); Microstructure of materials(scanning electron microscopy analysis, X-ray diffraction, laser diffraction, thermogravimetricanalysis, infrared spectroscopy and mercury micro porosity); Materials durability testing andperformance: permeability to gases and water, corrosion, carbonation and chloride diffusion,porosityandcapillaryabsorption,actionofwaterandfreeze-thawaction;Servicelifemodels).
