• an electrical engineer from Coimbatore

• worked with Cooper Engineering as a systems analyst and as a senior management trainee at DCM in 1968

• Started microcomp with 5 other partners in 1975

• Started hcl in 1976

The beginning……..

• Begin with calculators….• Lauch first microcomputer in

1977• Started diversified appl.

Development• Started NIIT in 1981

The Dream

• Use the power of microprocessor to change the world

• 4 bit microcomputer based calculator

The growth

The Hurdles faced……

• First they could not import technology at that time.

• In 1980 started far east computers and had to achieve $1 millions in 5 months….

• In 1984 when clients asked for unix pc they prepare it in 3 weeks.

• The US story in 1990….• Started HP-HCL in 1991

The group started …

• Around this time they started many companies and joint ventures…..

Where they goofed up !

• This was when we decided to walk the software integration road. We created the integration database, much before Intel... but we killed it! We were so naïve, we killed a product line like that!

• They were first in off shoring but still behind infy and wipro, why?

• Whether it’s software, hardware, training, networking, telecom, peripherals or system integration, HCL

has an answer for all your IT needs

The consolidation phase

• Consolidating 18 group companies into just three ..

• HCL Technologies, HCL Infosystems, NIIT, HCL Comnet and HCL Perot - 5 out of 18 in 99

• Then only 2 remains…after 2000
