Have you heard about today’s mining busi-ness? The mining industry is facing its fifth year of a sustained commodities super-cycle that is driving spot prices for many mined goods—copper, gold, iron ore, potash, coal,
etc.—to record highs. In the past, prices for one com-modity such as aluminum may have been high while another, such as zinc, may have been at rock bottom. Never before have so many mined commodities been in such high demand.
Even though the U.S. has experienced an economic downturn, an emerging middle class has propelled the world economy forward. Today, manufacturers in China and India are scouring the globe looking for more natu-ral resources, while mining companies in Australia, Bra-zil and Russia are calling the shots in a sellers’ market.
Investments in mineral exploration and new mining projects have soared to unprecedented levels. More than $300 billion is being invested in mining projects worldwide.
The other side of the coin is the unfortunate, inflation-ary pressures, such as the increasing costs for diesel fuel, natural gas, steel, etc., is reducing profit margins and the problems that affect the developing world, the availabil-ity of power and water, also impact mining. Even though miners are getting fair price for their efforts, they must remain vigilant when it comes to productivity. To do this, they continually turn to technology.
Mining Media has served as the leading media outlet for the mining industry for five years now. The com-pany’s leading business-to-business trade journals and conferences help keep mining engineers and metallur-gists abreast of the latest technologies in mining and mineral processing.
The flagship publication for these markets continues to be Engineering & Mining Journal (E&MJ). E&MJ was first published in 1866 as the original dedicated mining publication and has been serving the mining industry for 142 years! It maintains a loyal circulation of more than 20,000 qualified readers and is audited
annually by BPA to ensure its value to advertisers, which is why it carries more ad pages than any other comparable magazine.
Coal Age is also a mining industry icon and has been serving the North American coal industry for almost a century. Launched in 1911, it has continu-ously provided the latest news and technical infor-mation on coal mining, exploration, preparation, transportation and utilization. More than 15,000 professionals read it each month and it has long been referred to as the “bible of the industry.” Coal Age is the only North American publication with such extensive circulation backed up by BPA audits for advertiser verification.
In 2006, Mining Media addressed the explosive developments in Latin America by launching Equipo Minero, which has now become a trusted source for technology reporting in the Spanish-speaking mining regions. Equipo Minero has an extensive circulation of more than 7,600 from Argentina, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Mexico. Equipo Minero is also BPA audited.
In cooperation with the CMRA, Mining Media launched C&D World magazine last year to offer con-struction and debris recyclers access to more techni-cal information. Mining Media is also organizing the C&D World exhibition in Tampa, Florida for the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association.
Mining Media also publishes special Chinese and Russian issues as well as industry directories such as the World Mining Directory, Keystone Coal Industry Manual, Coal Mine Directory and Coal Preparation Directory & Handbook. Our electronic initiatives include our web site www.mining-media.com an electronic magazine WOMP (World of Mining Pro-fessionals), and an online directory of equipment, products and services for the global mining industry World Mining Equipment at www.wme.com.
2009 sees the return of Mining Media’s industry leading Longwall USA equipment exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pa., and the Haulage & Loading Conference and exhibit in Phoeniz, Ariz.
Mining Media continues to find innovative ways to bring together suppliers and operators and to maintain its place as the leader in the industry.

If you want your advertising to be seen by the most influential readers in the industry, your best choice for international exposure in both established and emerging markets is Engineering & Mining Journal.
For the past 140 years, Engineering & Mining Jour-nal (E&MJ) has been the voice of the international mining community providing in-depth, unmatched editorial to an extensive readership that far out-numbers the closest competitor. Our audited readership is delivered to readers from companies
like Anglo American, Teck Cominco, Newmont, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Albian Sands, and every other major company involved in the mining industry. Decision mak-ers throughout the mining industry rely on E&MJ for the latest in industry news, trends, and techniques.
E&MJ’s extensive circulation will bring your brand from North American and Europe to Africa, the Asia-Pacific rim, and Latin America. In important emerging markets, E&MJ’s circulation is often double or more than triple
that of our competitors. There is simply no better publi-cation to reach the international market.
Whether the market is copper, gold, nickel, iron ore, lead/zinc, PGM, diamonds or other commodities, E&MJ takes the lead in projecting trends, following development and reporting on the most efficient oper-ating processes. Each issue is filled with regional news from U.S. and Canada, Latin America, Africa, Asia and Australia as well as a regular international coal section. Our World Mining Equipment sections deal with oper-ating strategies, suppliers reports, processing solutions, and the latest technology issues for mine operators. This focus on equipment also makes E&MJ the most popu-lar magazine among advertisers and we carry far more advertising pages than our competitors.
Make a statement to the buyers of your equipment or services: plan your advertising program in the one mag-azine that reaches more of the important readers in the markets that matter most.

Circulation you can trust.
In the competitive world of Business-to-Business publishing, there are a variety of publishing compa-nies and magazines that operate with differing levels of professionalism. Some make outrageous claims of circulation with no substantiation.
In publishing there is only one way to verify the claims of publishers: with a circulation audit by a recognized independent auditor like BPA. The audit not only verifies the source of the circulation and whether the readers are actually qualified, but also verifies the print order and matches postal receipts with claimed distribution. For the publisher it is an expensive and arduous process, but is justified in the value to advertisers.
E&MJ has an average qualified circulation of 20,048 with an additional average non-qualified circulation of 3,923 for a total of 23,971. E&MJ does not include electronic issues in this total. (Source: BPA Circulation Statement for the Period Ended December 2007. June 2008 state-ments available on request.)
Mining Magazine has an average qualified circulation of 14,929—and when the 774 copies of multiple issues delivered to the same addressee are removed, the average circulation drops to just 14,155. A total of 2,705, or 18.3%, of these are from the 2007 SME Annual Meeting & Exhibition. (Source: BPA Circulation Statement for the Period Ended December 2007.)
International Mining has elected to remain unaudited and the claimed circulation of only 12,492 includes both printed and PDF versions of the magazine. (Source: International Mining website, August 2008.)

Thanks to the resilience of the American coal industry, robust international demand, and the convenience and relatively low cost of the fuel, the future of coal mining in the United States remains bright. For nearly 100 years, Coal Age has been the magazine that readers can trust for guidance and insight on this important industry. It remains the most widely read and most respected maga-zine in the industry.
Globally, the demand for coal continues to grow as indus-trialized and developing nations’ demand for low-cost energy increases. Over the next two decades, the U.S. Department of Energy has forecasted that total world-wide energy demand will grow more than 55% and coal use is forecast to grow 74%.
Coal Age: Serving the Needs of the Coal Mining and Processing Industry

The U.S. produced 1.15 billion tons of coal in 2007, according to the National Mining Association. Domes-tic coal consumption of coal was 1.13 billion tons million tons in 2007 and 93% was used for electrical power gen-eration. As a fuel source, coal continues to provide nearly 50% of total electricity generation in the U.S.
The American coal industry loves a weak-dollar econ-omy. Recently, exports surged to about 60 million tons, a nearly 20% increase from 2006. Today U.S. power gen-erators find themselves competing with Europeans for U.S. coal, keeping prices at a premium
Global market forces helped propel U.S. coal markets in 2008. Last year, Australian mines experienced flooding
and transportation constraints. China’s winter blast and a South African power outage diverted even more coal sup-plies worldwide, fueling a newfound interest in U.S. coal.
Long-term, Arch Coal recently estimated that a substan-tial amount of new coal-fired capacity is being planned throughout the world, particularly in Asia. Analyst esti-mates suggest that an additional 1.1 billion tons of coal will be needed by 2012, essentially requiring the replica-tion of the U.S. coal industry during the next five years.
As the market for coal continues to grow, Coal Age will remain the best choice for advertisers selling machinery and services to the coal producers.
As Coal Age nears its centenary, we are proud not only of our longevity, but of the quality of the publication that we continue to create. As the industry changes and responds to new challenges, Coal Age will continue to lead with meaninigful—and fearless—editorial that commands respect from a demanding and loyal readership.
No other publication comes close to Coal Age’s circula-tion and no other publication can promise advertisers the return on their advertising investment. The most widely read and most respected magazine in the indus-try is still your best choice to reach your audience.

A look at world coal production statistics will make one thing completely obvi-ous: China and Russia become more important to the mining industry with every passing year. Companies with an eye to international expansion can’t afford to ignore these important regions.
China’s importance to the coal market is readily apparent, but its growing influence in other arenas is become just as obvious. In 2007, China produced 284 tons of gold, 1 million tons of copper, and 227 million tons of iron ore. In Russia, soaring steel and energy prices have brought investment atten-tion to Russia, ensuring the continued flow of capital into into safety and efficiency improvements.
Mining Media, with proven publications, can help your organization expand its global reach by bringing your message to these important markets.
With that increasing demand and concurrent increases in production comes opportunities for companies supplying mining machinery and services in China. Coal Age/E&MJ China, published in Chinese and distributed to a list of more than 10,000 decision makers in China’s mining companies. It will continue to provide a unique opportunity for advertisers looking to break into the Chinese market or looking to continue to extend their brand and relationships through a quality, local publication with extensive experi-ence and knowledge in that market.

With the largest circulation in the marketplace, C&D World maga-zine, the official publication of the Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA), is your company’s ticket to get its message to the leaders and decisionmakers in the C&D recycling and demolition industries. More than 10,000 quali-fied subscribers received C&D World’s six issues every year, and new targeted readers are continuously added.
But the best part of C&D World is the way it brings those readers the latest news, trends, and innovations in the marketplace. That’s because the affiliation with the CMRA provides the editorial guidance to make the articles inside the magazine worth the attention of the readers. The editorial staff is headed by William Turley, executive director of the CMRA and by at least a decade the only journalist who has exclusively cov-ered only the C&D industry. Recycling and demoli-tion is our total focus at C&D World, and because of our long reach and influence in the marketplace, we are providing the type of information readers want and need, which makes C&D World the place where your marketing message will be seen.
