The Spirit in John 14-16

The Spirit would be a Helper. (Parakletos)

John 14:16-17

[16] “I will ask the Father, and He will give you

another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

[17] that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world

cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know

Him, but you know Him

John 14:16-17

because He abides with you and will be in you.

The Spirit in John 14-16

The Spirit would be a Teacher.

John 14:25-26

[25] “These things I have spoken to you while

abiding with you.

John 14:25-26 [26] “But the Helper, the

Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My

name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all

that I said to you.

The Spirit in John 14-16

The Spirit would be a Testifier.

John 15:26-27[26] “When the Helper

comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify

about Me,

John 15:26-27

[27] and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the

beginning.

The Spirit in John 14-16

The Spirit would be a Convicter.

John 16:5-11 [7] “But I tell you the truth,

it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper

will not come to you; but if I go, I will send

Him to you.

John 16:5-11

[8] “And He, when He comes, will convict the

world concerning sin and righteousness

and judgment;

John 16:5-11 [9] concerning sin, because they do not

believe in Me; [10] and concerning

righteousness, because I go to the Father and you

no longer see Me;

John 16:5-11

[11] and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has

been judged.

The Spirit in John 14-16

The Spirit would be a Guide.

John 16:12-15

[12] “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear

them now.

John 16:12-15[13] “But when He, the

Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His

own initiative,

John 16:12-15

but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you

what is to come.

John 16:12-15

[14] “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

John 16:12-15

[15] “All things that the Father has are Mine;

therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will

disclose it to you.

Jesus Sending the Spirit

Notice how this worked in Acts 2.

1 Corinthians 14:37

[37]  If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let

him recognize that the things which I write to

you are the Lord's commandment.

1 Thessalonians 2:13

[13]  For this reason we also constantly thank God

that when you received the word of God which

you heard from us,

(1) Still speaks.

Ephesians 4:30

[30] Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the

day of redemption.

The Spirit…

(2) Can be grieved.

1 Thessalonians 5:19

[19] Do not quench the Spirit;

The Spirit…

(3) Can be quenched.

The Spirit is trying to help

us believe!
