Teachers are meant to teach their students. That is why I have created this slideshow to help inform you of different strategies to help steer you in the correct path when you may come across a difficulty before during or after your reading. Reading may be difficult, but with the right strategies/tools anyone can do it

Strategies forBefore you read:

1. Activate Background Knowledge.

Good readers make predictions based on background knowledge.

2. PRE READ SURVEY-5 ways to survey a reading ahead of time

• Read the titles and subtitles of the chapter or reading.

• Look closely at the picture and captions.

• Note the bold and italicized words.• Note the words that are repeated often.• Read the first and last sentence of each

paragraph

This helps make predictions and create a mind-map that can be filled in as they read.

4. Possible SentencesCreate a list of key terms and phrases from a reading. Provide students with a list of these terms and have students use two words or phrases to create possible sentences they might come across during their reading. Afterwards have them evaluate the relatedness of their sentences.

5. Motivational Activities

Use any activity that interests students in the text and motivates them to read it. For example: you bring a real rabbit to class before reading a rabbit story.

Strategies for During Reading

1. Sticky Notes Students use “post its” to write thoughts and stick to a text to easily remember it!

2. New wordsThis is used during guided reading time to help the student without giving them the word.

3. Response Sheet• Students note key statements on the

left and personal responses to them on the right; provides as a study guide later on.

4. Lit CirclesAn independent reading activity that prompts student-generated discussions on a chosen text. This keeps the

students actively engaged!

5. PantomimeDuring non-fiction reading in class, students can act out scenes to make the reading a fun activity

After Reading Strategies

1. Expert JigsawAn expert jigsaw breaks up a large text into smaller chunks. It allows the students to take leadership by teaching their peers what they have learnt but first gives them the confidence to do so by giving them time to consult with other students that read the same section of a given text.

2. ReflectionStudents write about the new content they learned and describe how the new learning relates to previous understanding.

3. Twitter Summaries Students must summarize the text in 140 characters or less.

4. Exit SlipsAsk students to complete a set of questions or respond to a prompt at the end of the lesson to check understanding.

Students write their their thoughts down on a given subject based on the non-fiction reading, then discuss with a partner and share it with the class. This can force interaction and possible uncovers different perspectives.
