SECURE THE FUTURE is an innovative, comprehensive,public-private initiative to fight HIV/AIDS in sub-SaharanAfrica, where the needs of people infected with andaffected by the disease are great and health care andother resources limited. The initiative supports research,community education and supportive services, trainingfor doctors and other health care professionals, andthe construction of new facilities and infrastructure.
A collaborative effort to fight the disease, it bringstogether government leaders, Ministries of Health,medical institutions in the U.S., Africa and Europe,physicians and other health care professionals, non-governmental, community-based and faith-basedorganizations, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Bristol-Myers SquibbFoundation launched the initiative—the first andlargest corporate commitment of its kind to fightHIV/AIDS in Africa—in 1999. Now, with $150million committed through more than 230 grants,SECURE THE FUTURE is sharing outcomes,
experiences and lessons learned withpeople fighting the disease in develop-
ing countries around the world.The work of SECURE THEFUTURE will continue inAfrican communities in theyears to come.

BRISTOL-MYERS SQUIBBFOUNDATION NGOTRAINING INSTITUTEThis first African NGOTraining Institute is develop-ing model training modules to build leadership, management and goodgovernance skills amongorganizations working to fight HIV/AIDS.

From 1999 to2002, the program was focused on broad-based grantmaking to support medicalresearch and community outreach and education. From 2003 to 2007, focusedinvestments were made in community based HIV/AIDS care and treatment support, NGO training, and pediatric AIDS.
In 2008 SECURE THE FUTURE entered its third phase as a TechnicalAssistance and skills transfer program. This phase will capitalize onSECURE THE FUTURE’s funding, program management experience and expertise, and track record as a committed private public partnership program. The aim is to replicate SECURE THE FUTURE’slessons, experiences and successful models, and address a strategicchallenge of operational multi-sectoral collaborations in HIV by harness-ing community resources and capacity.

CHILDREN’S HIV/AIDSCLINICAL CENTERS OFEXCELLENCESECURE THE FUTUREand Baylor College ofMedicine opened the firstclinical center in Africafocused on children withHIV/AIDS, located inBotswana. AdditionalChildren’s Clinical Centersof Excellence have opened in Lesotho, Swaziland andUganda, with two more tobe built in Burkina Fasoand Tanzania.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ANDSKILLS TRANSFER PROGRAMSECURE THE FUTURE is providingseed funding and together with itsimplementing partners has formed afaculty to provide technical assistanceto governments, non-governmentalorganizations, and the privatesector to scale up HIV/AIDS
care and support in Africa.
60 GRANTS TO HELPMAINTAIN LOWPREVALENCE OFHIV/AIDS IN4 COUNTRIES INWEST AFRICAThese innovative grants target specific groups vulnerable to HIV infection(commercial sex workers,mobile populations, ambulatoryvendors, househelp, prisonersand MSM); leverage railroadlines and transport lanes to deliver education and care; leverage traditional communicatorsin education and care efforts; and
drive prevention through care and support for PLWHA.
