Second Life Group Chat

MLani Montgomery

Hi,I’m M’Lani. Welcome to my home. Today I’d

like to show you a couple of things about using

group chat in Second Life.

Look at the red arrow to the bottom left. This is

the Communicate button. Double click it, and you will get a window. See

the blue arrow.

The blue arrow is now showing you that as I was taking these pictures, one of my groups sent out a SLURL—a Second Life

URL, for an event announcement.

You can see a new tab opened up, and below the text from the IM

(Instant Message) appears in open chat.

If you look closely, you can see the tab says the name of the group: ISTE

—Educational Technology. But the IM below shows the person

who is speaking in the chat room.

These two tabs at the top of my Communication window are for Friends and Groups. I have the

Friends tab opened, and I see the people I know who are online now.

Now I have my group tabs open, and all the groups I belong to are shown. You can see I have selected BSU TL Summer 09, our class

group.

If I were to double click on this group, a new chat

tab would appear up. Touching that tab would

open that chat room.

Like this. Now I have an open channel to

everyone in class who happens to be online.

When I type here and hit “enter” or the “Send” key

here in the window, everyone in class online

will get the same message. We can all talk at once no matter where

we are.

I can have multiple chats going on in IM. Here you see I have a tab for Miss Annie, Alan, and the BSU

class all open at once.

The far left tab, Contacts, takes me back to look at

either my friends or groups lists.

I hope pointing out these features will help in our

field trip communications. Let me know how I can

improve this presentation. Thank you!

M’Lani Montgomery

See you in Second Life!
