Sermon on Second Commandment

TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Worship

Brownstown Church of Christ

Exodus 20:4-6

"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth

beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD

your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth

generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me

and keep my commandments.

Offertory

Proverbs 11:24-25 (MSG) 24 The world of the generous gets larger and

larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.

25 The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.

Communion

On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for

you. Do this to remember me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new

covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as

often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death

until he comes again.

Make No Idols

Make No Idols

The dictionary offers this definition: “an image used as an object of worship.”

Make No Idols

To adore is to like very much or to love very deeply.

But adore also means to adore worship with divine honors

Make No Idols

The Second Commandment tells us HOW we worship.

Make No Idols

We think this Commandment is the most irrelevant of the 10 Commandments.

Make No Idols

This is the only commandment with both a threat and a promise.

Make No Idols

You can’t escape that fact and it takes generations to crawl out from under that

burden..

Make No Idols

God promises to show his loyal love to a thousand generations..

Make No Idols

God has promised to help pass along my values to the next generation.

Make No Idols

“I am fully committed to you and I expect you to be fully committed to me.”

Make No Idols

If your religion never makes you or others uncomfortable, you better find out what

happened to the cross you’re supposed to be carrying.

Make No Idols

I Must Give God the Right to be God in My Life Whether I Like It or Not.

Make No Idols

I Must Not Judge God by His Ability to Fulfill All My Desires.

Make No Idols

“God doesn’t owe you anything.”

Make No Idols

I Must Constantly Evaluate My Priorities in Light of Matthew 6:33.

Make No Idols

When I put God first … “all these things” will be given to me.

Make No Idols

Do you know what you call a person who puts “all these things ahead of God?

You call that person an idolater!

Make No Idols

Most of them are simply good things that have taken over the controlling interest in

our lives.

Make No Idols

When ends become means and when things become more important than people.

Make No Idols

“The Christian life is a process of God breaking our idols one by one.”

Make No Idols

The only thing God has promised us is Himself! Anything else is a bonus.

Make No Idols

Anything good can become an idol if we give it more attention than we do God.

Make No Idols

Happiness comes from a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

Make No Idols

Or you can spend your life doing God’s will. And when you die, it’s not over. Life has just

begun.t.

Make No Idols

The only lasting cure for idolatry is a fervent love for God.

Go and Serve

“Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole. I want Thee forever to live in my soul. Break

down every idol, cast out every foe. Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.”
