UseofSeaKlear®inoutdoorheatedpooloverwintertime2016-2017The study was done at the municipality of Olafsfjordur in the north of Iceland. Theswimmingpoolwatercomesfromdrilledwellsintheareaandisveryalkaline(pH9–9.5).TocomplywiththeregulationthatrequiresthewaterpHtobe7.0-7.8,aCO2supplysystemhasbeeninstalled.Chlorineisalsocontinuouslysuppliedasrequired.

TheOlafsfjordurmainswimmingpoolcontains340m3ofwaterandhasa22m3 sump tank.Thewater is recycledthroughasand filtersystem,circulating7m3ofwater in20minutes. The site also includes a childrens‘ play pool(18.8m3)andtwohottubs(12m3each).

Duringthe2016-2017studyperiod,400mlofSeaKlear®Clarifierwasaddedtwiceaweekto thewater of themain swimmingpool just before entering the sump tank and 150mlweeklyintothesumptankofeachhottub.Chlorineusage(Oct.-Feb.)wascomparedtoasimilar period in 2015-2016, as the control. CO2 usage (Dec.-March) was compared to asimilarperiodin2015-2016.Theresultsclearlyshowthatthedailyaveragechlorineusagedecreased from 6.3 to 3.5 Lwhile the daily CO2 usage decreased from 6.6 to 3.2 L. Thissubstantial decrease in the use of chlorine and CO2 resulted in considerable operationalsavings,44%and52%respectively,duringthestudyperiod.
