OverviewTectonicplatesarelargeslabsofEarth’slithosphere.Theymoveorslideovertheasthenosphere– thetoppartofthemantle.Earth’scoreunevenlyheatstheasthenosphere.Thisunevenheatingcausesthetectonicplatestomove.Tectonicplatescanmovetowardseachother,moveawayfromeachotherorslidepasteachother.

Whenplatesmoveawayfromeachother,newlithosphereiscreated.Whenplatesmovetowardseachother,lithosphereisdestroyed.Whenplatesslidepasteachother,they“grind,”whichcreatesdisturbancessuchasearthquakes.

TECTONICPLATEBOUNDARIES

Thetypeofmovementthatoccursattheboundarybetweentectonicplatesdeterminesthetypeofplateboundarythatexistsbetweenthem.Therearethreetypesofplateboundaries:convergent,divergentandtransform.

Twotectonicplatesmovetowardseachotherataconvergentboundary.Thisboundaryisalsocalledadestructiveplateboundarybecauseoneplateisslowlydestroyedattheboundary.Ataconvergentboundary,thedenserplatesubducts ormovesbelowthelessdenseplate.Itmeltsandbecomespartofthemantle.Therearethreetypesofconvergentplateboundaries:oceanic-oceanic,oceanic-continentalandcontinental-continental.Thegraphicssummarizewhatoccursateachtypeofconvergentboundary.

Twotectonicplatesmoveawayfromeachotheratadivergentboundary.Thisboundaryisalsocalledaconstructiveboundarybecausenewcrustorlithosphereiscreatedattheboundary.Astheplatemoveapart,moltenrockfromwithinEarthmovesupwardandfillsthespacebetweentheplates.Themoltenrockcoolsandformsnewcrust.

Twotectonicplatesslidepasteachotheratatransformboundary.Thisboundaryisalsocalledaconservativeplateboundarybecausecrustisneithercreatednordestroyedatthisboundary.Transformboundariesareoftenfoundbetweentwoconvergent,twodivergentoraconvergentanddivergentboundary.
