PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger
ENROLMENT 2019 Our enrolment process for 2019 has commenced. It is very important that we receive accurate information as early as possible. Therefore, if you are intending to leave our school at any stage for whatever reason could you please let us know via an email to barton.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au. This will assist greatly in the 2019 staffing of the school and also the provision of extra classrooms. Parents wishing to enrol their child for Prep in 2019 are to contact the school to arrange to be included in the process. Our first six 2019 Prep enrolment sessions have been held and each session was fully subscribed. If you are a current parent of the school you still need to register for one of these sessions. Please let Beccy know when booking that you are a current parent at the school and we will provide a different information session for you. This is the only way parents can receive the Prep enrolment form. If you know of anyone new to our area with school age children, let them know that our enrolment process is underway. Please ensure the successful inclusion of your child by contacting the school and registering for the enrolment program. Please ask for Beccy our Enrolment Manager when making your enquiry.
BARTON’S GOT TALENT What an exciting assembly we had today with our finalists from the Barton’s Got Talent program. Congratulations to Ms Jemma Dunston one of our Performing Arts teachers who has done a tremendous amount of work to get this program to a conclusion. All the way through all students have had an opportunity to participate. These performance opportunities have come during lunchtime with sometimes a very large audience. The final performances today were excellent and we are very proud of each of them. Please see the photos below of all our finalists. Thank you to all of the parents who attended assembly today to support the finalists.

SCHOOL COUNCIL – EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETING Our next School council meeting will be Thursday 28thJune 2.15pm. We will be discussing a range of items including the grade 3/4 camp documentation and the new DET policy portal. LOST PROPERTY We are amazed in our admin area of how much lost property we get daily. We gave parents five iron on labels for jackets and yet we still get jackets at the office unnamed. In addition there are an increasing amount of toys and bits and pieces that are handed in. These may be very special to your child. We have put these items on display at assembly today and we will do this once more next week. Whatever is left after Friday’s assembly will be disposed of. GRADE 5/6 CAMP Our students in grade 5/6 have an opportunity to attend a 4 day camp to the Education Department camp at Woorabinda- near Yallourn. This adventure based camp will prove to be a highlight to their education and something they will remember fondly for years to come. The permission notes were sent home with all grade 5/6 children today and an electronic copy will be posted on Sentral. If you have any questions regarding the camping program please contact our Camps coordinator Jake Simon Ph. 03 8766 4000. GRADE 3/4 CAMP There is also a planned grade 3/4 camp in Term 3. Final details are being approved by school council via the Education Committee next Thursday. Grade 3/4 students will receive further information next Friday. EXCURSION ENVELOPES If a payment is required for a school based activity like a camp, excursion or an activity at school, a payment envelope is sent home stapled to the activity notice. This envelope apart from being the receptacle for returning payment also has an indemnity form on it which must be signed. Please assist us and ensure your child will be able to attend by doing the following:
Read all of the information
Sign the envelope and return it to the school by the due date.
Enclose the correct money for the activity or come into the school and pay by EFTPOS/credit card
Return the envelope STUDENT REPORTS To assist parents to understand their child’s student semester reports we provided opportunities for Parent/Teacher Interviews. This is the best way to understand what the report means. Some parents have said that they do not know what issues there are with their child’s learning. If there is an issue with your child’s learning then there would be a comment in the General Comments section of the report outlining this. Also if there was any issue with your child’s learning the teacher would be in touch with you to discuss strategies to assist your child. If you are still unclear please message your child’s teacher via Sentral and arrange for them to contact you to discuss.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT – Linda Buckeridge
NAIDOC WEEK 8th -15th July 2018
During the Term 3 holidays a very special event will be celebrated called NAIDOC Week. This is
a time when all Australians can celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples. At Barton PS we proudly recognise all cultures within our
community and ensure our approach to teaching and learning is inclusive of all cultures and
needs. We work closely with our DET Koorie Engagement and Support Officer (KESO) who
often provides us with opportunities for our school community to participate in a wide range of
events throughout Victoria and, in particular, the Casey region.
This year NAIDOC Week is celebrating the essential role women have played – and continue to
play – as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels. It
is aptly titled ‘Because Of Her, We Can!’
The following website will provide you with further information regarding the celebration of
NAIDOC Week across Australia.
https://www.naidoc.org.au/
In conjunction, the Melbourne Museum is supporting NAIDOC Week in Victoria with a range of
activities spanning two weeks at Bunjilika Aboriginal Cultural Centre at the Melbourne Museum
on Nicholson St in Carlton. The link below will provide you with further information.

PREP NEWS
Excitement has started to build this week, as our visit to Myuna Farm is happening on Monday! In
preparation, students have been writing about different animals on the farm and using WOW words to
describe them. We are also still learning about living things and what they need to survive. We looked at
the different things we would need to take on a camping trip and sorting items as needed or not needed.
REMINDERS FOR MYUNA FARM:
In the event of poor weather gumboots or ‘wet weather’ shoes are optional.
Dress in full school uniform including jackets. We may get a little bit of rain and want students to
be dressed appropriately for the cold and rain. Any beanies worn must have the Barton logo.
We will pack our zero hero lunches in tubs and transport them on the bus and store in a secure
location at the farm.
In reading, we have been learning to predict what will happen next in the story. In the pictures below the
students listened to a story called ‘The Dreadful Fluff” and had to draw what they thought would happen
when the main character got out a vacuum cleaner!
From the Prep Team (Bronte Wills, Jarryd Foster, Blake Maxworthy, Sue Davis, Emily Roberts, and
Meaghan Mann)
Reminders:
You child’s reader bag must come to school everyday so that your child is able to borrow books from the library
and bring home a selection of Take Home Readers for the week.
Don’t forget to log onto Bug Club, Reading Eggs regularly and Mathletics.
Please remember to label all beanies and jackets.

GRADE 1-2 REPORT
Over the last few weeks, the Grade 1/2 students
have been learning about procedural writing. To
be successful in their writing, the following stages
must be included:
Title
Goal
Materials
Steps
Personal Statement
Students have been involved in many hands on
activities in their writing workshops such as
making funny face biscuits, how to create a
dream catcher, how to draw or even how to be a
good student. From these experiences, students
are then given the opportunity to write a
procedural text based on their workshop
experience during big write.

Barton Primary encourages all
students to be a Zero Hero.
Reading must occur every night, for
at least 20 minutes.
Hair ties must be purple, navy blue or
white.
Stockings must be navy blue.
Check Sentral for upcoming
information regarding events in the 1/2
Learning Hub.
As the term draws closer to an end, we are
revisiting and revising many of the skills taught in
Mathematics over the semester. This provides
the students an opportunity to consolidate their
understanding and to build their confidence.

GRADE 3-6 REPORT
TERM 2
It has been another productive term in the Grade 3 – 6 Learning Hub. We have been very
productive in our workshops, completing our Inquiry projects and investigating in Science
sessions. We have also been a part of some special events such as Lightning Prem, Cross
Country, NAPLAN, ANZAC Day assembly, Simultaneous Reading, Open Morning and Mother’s
Day Breakfast. For each of these events, all students participated with enthusiasm and
eagerness. After such a busy term, we hope all students have a safe and relaxing holiday.
LIGHTNING PREM
The grade 5 & 6 students successfully participated in Lightning Prem Day. We sent teams to
play soccer, volleyball and netball. All students showed great determination and sportsmanship
when competing against other schools. All teams looked very professional in their new sport
tops. Thank you to Mrs Thomas and Mr Felsinger for their work in organising these tops.
GRADE 5-6 INQUIRY
Parliament is ‘live’ in Learning Hub 4! This week we had a special visit from King Felsinger and
Ms Buckeridge who motioned the appointment of the Prime Minister. The students have
enjoyed being involved in creating their own parliament where we have already had one bill
passed. We are looking forward to seeing the other bills each political party comes up with.
REMINDERS:
Students need to be reading for at least 45 minutes and are filling in their reading logs
themselves.
Big write prompts are being discussed before the big write that happens each Thursday.
Please think of ways that your child can minimise the amount of waste they bring to
school each day, so they can be a Zero Hero, and hopefully win the class trophy at
assembly.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & SPORT REPORT Grade 3/4 Sporting Schools Program
On Thursday afternoons, Grade 3 and 4 students have been participating in a sporting schools
program. Students participated in 1 of the 3 sports- Basketball, Volleyball and Rugby. Students
completed a 4-week program during school time where they had an expert coach come in and
take the sessions. The program gives students an opportunity to experience a variety of sports.
The sessions focused on the key skills needed to play the specific sport.
Coles Vouchers
We received our final count for the Coles sports for schools program. Our school collected a
whopping 46393 vouchers!
An order has been made based on suggestions from the SRC group for sports equipment that
can be added to our class kits. The new equipment will include- basketballs, skipping ropes,
footballs, hoops, netballs, soccer balls, rugby balls, four square balls, vortex’s and play balls.
We look forward to getting this equipment out to the classes for all students to use, once we
receive the order. We thank everyone very much for contributing to this great initiative.
Uniforms
We have been lucky enough to get some new Barton sports tops for when we go out and
compete against other schools. We are happy with the way they have turned out and the design
looks fantastic! We will display these at one of the upcoming assemblies.
Regional Cross Country
On Thursday 21st June, Caplen participated in the Regional Cross Country at Hastings
Foreshore. We will have an updated report at our final assembly and next newsletter.
Grade 5/6 Lighting Premiership
On Thursday 21st June, Grade 5 and 6 students participated in the District Lightning
Premiership Day. They played soccer, netball or volleyball on the day. We will have an updated
report at our final assembly and next newsletter.

ENVIRO ED
We have had such a busy few weeks in Enviro. Students from Prep – Grade 2 have been
‘upcyling inventors’ planning and constructing ways we can reuse household rubbish items.
In Grade 3 and 4 we have been investigating fresh food life cycles including how much fresh
produce is wasted in Australia each year. Through exploring this concept over the past few
weeks we were all shocked to find out the magnitude of waste in our country. If you would
like to do some further learning at home the ABC series ‘War on Waste’ is a documentary
that explores waste in Australia.
40% of all bananas grown in Australia are
thrown away at the farm, before they
even reach supermarket shelves
because they’re “too big” or
“too small”.
Avocado trees can take
up to 15 years to bear
fruit and some trees will
never grow fruit!
Grade 5/6 students have conducted an audit of litter at Barton, some pleasing reductions in
classroom rubbish is awesome to see! A reminder that our Zero Hero program is to be followed
always, not just at school! Please remind your siblings to take their rubbish home with them before
and after school and if you play Kelly Sport remember to be a Zero Hero!
A reminder Woolworths is now single use plastic bag
free! YAY!!!! Pack your reusable bags!

MUSIC
We’ve seen lots of creativity in music over the past few weeks!
Preps have been exploring different meters in music. They especially have enjoyed creating
“fancy” waltzes to a meter of 3! The song “Stinky Pirates” has been a big hit when exploring a
meter of 2.
Grade 1-2 have been exploring the way
melodies can move up or down in steps or
skips. After watching an amazing “flash
mob” orchestral performance of ‘Ode to
Joy’, students created their own orchestras
using Bookwhackers as tuned instruments.
A group composition was created and
practised using steps, skips and repeated
notes, then performed to the class.
Grade 3-4 have been linking their learning of dotted and tied
notes to their recorder playing and the playing of other
instruments. Most recently, these students have
collaboratively composed and notated a musical piece for
Xylophone, Recorder and the Djembe drum.
Grade 5-6 have been enjoying their small-group rotation activities, focussing on such
composition skills as loop-based music creation, music and sound effects for movies and
targeted Ukulele learning.
