Disorders of the Parathyroid gland are increasingly being recognized. Primary Hyperparathyroidism is the 3rd most common endocrine disorder.
Its prevalence in the osteoporotic population may be as high as 10% and it is often an underdiagnosed and underappreciated cause of Secondary Osteoporosis. Patients with chronic kidney disease may develop secondary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism with chronic kidney disease mineral and bone disorder. There have been major advances in imaging and surgical modalities for hyperparathyroidism in the last two decades.
Hypoparathyroidism most often occurs after neck surgery; it can also be caused by autoimmune destruction of the glands and other less common but fascinating genetic conditions. Management of parathyroid disorders has increasingly become an area where multispecialty expertise is required. It is an area where Bone Metabolism Specialists, Imaging specialists, Surgeons and Renal Physicians need to collaborate.
The Parathyroid Bone and Kidney Seminar organized jointly by the Chapter of Endocrinologists, College of Physicians, Academy of Medicine, Singapore and the Departments of Surgery at National University Hospital and Singapore General Hospital under the auspices of the Chapter of Endocrinologists, College of Physicians, Singapore, the Chapter of General Surgeons, College of Surgeons, Singapore and the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) aims to bring together Bone Metabolism, Renal, Imaging, Genetics and Surgical Specialists to discuss the latest updates and controversies in the diagnosis and management of Disorders of the Parathyroid Gland.
